CCAD Seniors Graduate May 16 | ||
CCAD’s spring commencement saw 249 seniors receive their diplomas, Saturday, May 16. This year’s commencement speaker was Ed Razek, president and chief marketing officer, brand & creative services for Limited Brands. Following his speech Razek was presented with an honorary degree from the college. The convocation was given by the Rev. Timothy C. Ahrens, and Valedictorian Melinda Duvall, CCAD President Dennison W. Griffith, and board of trustees Chair John Kobacker also addressed the graduating creative class of 2009. Eight students were honored as outstanding seniors: Olga Cuzuioc (Advertising & Graphic Design), Jee In Shin (Fashion Design), Grace Hilliard (Fine Arts), Sarah Wurm (Illustration), Elizabeth Snider (Industrial Design), Alison Lisek (Interior Design), Ian McDonald (time-based Media Studies), and Heidi Von Harringa (Photography). | Click image to see more photos | |
CCAD Winds Down Year with Campuswide Celebration | ||
CCAD’s academic year ended on a high note Friday, May 15, with the opening of THE SHOW a.k.a the 130th Annual Student Exhibition. Hundreds came to see artwork from all areas of study in six campus buildings. The auditorium was filled to capacity for the 6 p.m. showing of the senior fashion show and at 8 p.m. for presentations of animation, film, and video screenings. On the second floor of the Canzani Center, alumni gathered for homecoming and in the Crane Center graduates from the 90s reunited. While gallery hopping on campus, guests and students enjoyed the balmy May evening out on the quad where music and food vendors added to the festive atmosphere. | Click image to see more photos | |

CCAD's Fashion Show Makes Fashion Wire Press | ||
CCAD's Senior Fashion Show, Under the Big Top, got a nod from Fashion Wire Press (FWP), which referred to the show as dazzling and posted a plethora of runway pictures on its site. FWP is an online media company that licenses and distributes fashion week photos and video from the world's premiere fashion events. The Industrial & Interior Design department presented their senior thesis shows May 7. For 23 Industrial Design students the thesis show represented the capstone event in their field of study at CCAD. The Interior Design show included 18 students whose project designs focused on theory, historical precedents as well as contemporary research. | ||
Ohio Painting Exhibition Features CCAD Alumni, Faculty | ||
New Narratives: Paintings by Ohio Artists at the Riffe Gallery in Columbus includes work from alumni Adam Brouillette ('02) and Michael R. Stillion ('02) as well as Visual Communications adjunct instructors Ron Anderson and Brian R. Williams ('03). Williams will lead a family workshop creating an outdoor collaborative chalk drawing on Sunday, May 17 from 2 - 4 p.m. Presented by the Ohio Arts Council, the exhibition is open until July 12. Long-Time Instructor's Work Receives Honorable Mention | ||
Dorenda Crager Watson, an instructor in CCAD's Continuing Education program, received honorable mention in the 2009 Light Books Cover Competition for The Cracker, and her work Scarlet and Gray was selected for the Zanesville Art Center's 65th annual Ohio exhibition, which runs June 6 through July 22. Additionally, Watson is included in an article that addresses her long-time teaching career in the June 2009 issue of ART CALENDAR, a national business magazine for visual artists. | ![]() | |
Felton's Copywriting in Award-Winning Annual Reports | ||
George Felton, professor, Liberal Arts, was a copywriter for The Columbus Foundation's 2007 annual report, which recently won a silver ADDY from the Advertising Federation of Columbus. Wong Receives National Grant for Painting Database | ||
Leah Wong, adjunct instructor, Illustration, recently received a research grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to create an online database of Chinese oil paintings created from 1949 to 1979. She will interview artists in China this summer and collaborate with art historians at Ohio State University. | ||

Congratulations to Tam Peterson, the 2009 winner of the CCAD Award for Teaching Excellence! Tam Peterson is the chair of Foundation Studies and teaches painting, color theory, two-dimensional design and illustration. A CCAD alumna, Tam thanked colleagues who taught her, adding “Great teachers make great students, who in turn become great teachers.” The award was presented April 23 by CCAD President Denny Griffith. American Museum of Ceramic Art Adds Works by Hunt | ||
Four salt-glazed and crater-glazed stoneware pieces of Bill Hunt, professor, Fine Arts, have been accessioned into the permanent collection of the American Museum of Ceramic Art (www.ceramicmuseum.org). Located in California, the museum presents, collects and preserves significant ceramic achievements of the world's cultures. Other museums holding Hunt's works include the Canton Museum of Art, Saga Prefectural Art Museum in Japan, and Taipei Fine Arts Museum. | | |
Students Fashion Stimulating Apparel | ||
CCAD students partnered with Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio (PPCO) to present a quirky fashion exhibit on April 4 to kick off National STD Awareness Month. The students used variously colored specimens of PPCO's new line of Proper Attire condoms to decorate their apparel. | ||
Media Studies Senior Places in Ohio Film Competition | ||
David James (DJ) Cosgrove, a senior majoring in Media Studies, won third place for Love Birds in the first Ohio Film Office's music video competition. Cosgrove and John Young were honored March 31 by Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland at a showcase of Ohio filmmakers and musicians in conjunction with the return of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony to Cleveland. | ||

National Competition Illustrates CCAD Talent | ||
Four CCAD students are included in the Society of Illustrators 2009 Student Scholarship competition. Sarah Wurm, a senior majoring in Illustration, was awarded $1,500 in honor of Barbara Carr for Veggie Monster, a three dimensional illustration. Other CCAD students in the competition are: Kristen Zirngibl with her piece Amusement Park; Margaret Hardy with Chicago 29 and Yellow Wallpaper Eating Ugly Sweater; and Alex Alvarado with a piece titled Santa. The Museum of American Illustration will display the winning art May 6 - June 6, 2009. The opening awards gala is May 8 at the Society of Illustrators gallery in New York. | ![]() | |

Last fall a class of Industrial Design students worked with scientists and design professionals at Battelle to develop sustainable design solutions for real world problems that pose a threat to millions of people worldwide. Battelle awarded a grant to underwrite the project. Class project finalists Mark Hall, Samantha Richdale, Nathanial Worth and Andrew Czerpak presented their designs to the public on March 19, 2009 at Design Within Reach’s Community Design Series. | ||
Columbus Company Commissions Student Painting | ||
Tyler Bolyard, a sophomore majoring in Illustration, recently was commissioned by Comtex, an industrial laundry and linen service of Mount Carmel and OhioHealth Systems, to develop a large painting for the company's new facility. Bolyard learned about the opportunity through CCADCareers then developed conceptual sketches with a green theme that also incorporated 20 different flags of the home countries of the company's diverse staff. The final painting, to be unveiled in April 2009, will be approximately 5 feet by 10 feet. | ||

CCAD Students Win CSCA’s Creative Best Award | ||
During the November Columbus Society of Communicating Arts (CSCA) Creative Best competition, five Columbus College of Art & Design students working with, CCAD’s Design Group, received a Creative Best award for a professional campaign. The award-winning campaign “The Show” promoted CCAD’s annual student exhibition. CSCA’s prestigious Creative Best competition is one of the largest annual competitions for communicating artists in Ohio. For more information check out Design Group’s Web site. | ||
CCAD Celebrates Joe Canzani at Memorial Service | ||
Joseph V. Canzani, CCAD president from 1949-1995, passed away in August 2008, a few days before his 93rd birthday. A memorial event to honor his mighty legacy was held October 6 in the Canzani Center auditorium. Faculty, staff, alumni and friends gathered to pay tribute President Canzani, a man who had a fierce love for this institution and a lifelong commitment to its success. He was tireless in his dedication to the development of the college and the success of its students. |
