Student Is Finalist for National Competition

Derick Whitson’s photograph, part of the “Family Portrait” series
Junior Photography major Derick Whitson was selected as a finalist for Photographer’s Forum magazine’s Best of Photography 2012.
The hardcover book was released in December 2012 and features all winners, honorable mentions, and finalists for the magazine’s 32nd Annual Spring Photography Contest for high school and college students.
Whitson’s image is part of his Family Portrait series, which explores memories of his childhood in Mansfield, OH.
“I was really excited about being chosen as a finalist,” Whitson said. “I knew finalists were published, and when I got the book in the mail it was so surreal.”
This year’s judges were Ann Cutting, Art Center College of Design; Gene Strickland, Columbus State Community College; and Sherri Taylor, Syracuse University.
Whitson is a native of Mansfield, OH, and attended Mansfield Christian School.
