Last summer, Danielle Nicole Jones found herself alone in Florida while completing an internship with Chicos. Her son and family were home in Ohio; therefore, she discovered she suddenly had a lot of time on her hands. She used that time to search for her senior collection inspiration and found it unexpectedly in a palm tree.

“Palm trees struck me first with their outer beauty. They amazed me in their beautiful stature: a strong large trunk but free flowing at the top with the palm leaves,” she said. “I watched them as they went through the vicious tropical storms of Florida and I loved how no matter how hard the wind blew, the trunk stayed strong. While the leaves blew, the tree almost never tore down completely.”

Danielle found the palm to be almost a metaphor for her life.

“The meaning of palm trees is victorious, growth, and triumph—all true to my journey of life thus far. I felt this was the perfect opportunity to use this as a symbol, to speak to my victory. No matter how beat down I may have gotten through life’s circumstances, I will get back up and shine beautifully,” said Danielle.  “The fallen pieces of my leaves are only a testament of the storms I’ve weathered. I am a mother, a designer, a warrior, and I am victorious—A royal tree.”

Before coming to CCAD, Danielle earned an associate’s degree in graphic design and started creating designs for T-shirts for family and friends. That sparked a desire to study fashion in a deeper way.

“I’ve always admired clothing with the fancy prints and patterns and I wondered what would happen if my graphics experience and fashion could somehow marry and I could create wonderfully fun clothes,” said Danielle.

During her internship at Chicos she had the opportunity to work with the Computer Aided Design (CAD) department, which designs prints and patterns.

The experience inspired her to design her own prints for her collection.

The collection, aptly named “Royal Tree,” includes an assortment of prints created from the sketches and images captured during Danielle’s summer in Florida. Creating and producing her own patterned fabric added another challenge to her design process. The results; however, are stunning, and she’s found an area of fashion design that she’d like to pursue professionally.

“Ultimately I would love to be over a CAD team that deals with print, art, and color. Or, [work on] a trend team that travels and researches—drawing inspiration from all around the world,” said Danielle.
