CCAD students, alumni, and faculty were among 32 individuals and teams of artists who chalked temporary masterpieces on the town square at Easton Town Center during Chalk the Block Sept. 27 and 28.
Artists worked for nearly seven hours on hands and knees creating imaginative chalk murals on Saturday before winners were announced.
“It’s exhausting but really exhilarating,” said Illustration alumna Jen Wrubleski (CCAD 2010) as she put the finishing touches on her vibrantly colored piece.
Fine Arts alumna Cat Sheridan (CCAD 2003), director of Continuing & Professional Studies, and Adjunct Instructor Lisa McLymont took home the top prize, Best of Show, and $500 for their whimsical unicorn mural surrounded by the message “beauty comes from within” written in rainbow-hued letters.
Advertising & Graphic Design sophomore and returning Chalk the Block artist Candice Oates was awarded third-runner-up for her pixelated self-portrait. Oates said the piece was representative of her life since she started studying advertising at CCAD. “Now my world is just this pixelated jumble,” she said.
Fine Arts alumna Lea Gray (CCAD 2004) was awarded the Blick Art Award and Fine Arts alumnus Chris Tennant (CCAD 2006) took home the Pattycake Bakery Piece of Cake Award.
CCAD participants included Illustration alumna Hilary Frambes (CCAD 1992) from Plain City, OH (Lake Mary High School), Fine Arts alumnus Adam Brouillette (CCAD 2002) from Grandview, OH (Avon Lake High School), Fine Arts alumna Cat Sheridan (CCAD 2003) from Columbus, OH (Bishop Hartley High School), Fine Arts alumna Lea Gray (CCAD 2004) from Columbus, OH (Sidney High School), Fine Arts alumnus Adam Crum (CCAD 2006) from Columbus, OH (Avon Lake High School), Fine Arts alumnus Chris Tennant (CCAD 2006) from Columbus, OH (Fort Hayes Metro Education Center), Illustration alumna Nikki Smetters (CCAD 2009) from Hilliard, OH (Hilliard Darby High School), Illustration alumna Julia McCann (CCAD 2010) from Farmington Hills, MI (Dublin Scioto High School), Illustration alumna Jen Wrubleski (CCAD 2010) from Columbus, OH (Williamstown High School), Assistant Director of Admissions and Illustration alumnus Thom Glick (CCAD 2004) from Columbus, OH (Milton Union High School), Adjunct Instructor Christine Guillot Ryan, Adjunct Instructor Lisa McLymont, Advertising & Graphic Design sophomore Candice Oates (Central High School), and MFA candidates Amy Cubberly-Yeager from Columbus, OH, and Alenka De los Rios (Saint Ignatius Loyola High School).
