T-shirt design by CCAD students

America’s oldest Harley Davidson motorcycle dealer now has fresh new merchandise thanks to a group of CCAD students.

The project was facilitated by CCAD’s MindMarket, which brought together a team of students to tackle the design challenge—a new line of T-shirts for local dealer A.D. Farrow Co Harley Davidson.

“We wanted to seek out students for this project because we wanted to gain a fresh perspective about our brand from them,” said Bob Althoff, dealer principal at A.D. Farrow Co. Harley Davidson. “It was refreshing. They saw our brand in a way that maybe we had not yet explored.”

Armed with inspiration from the company’s Columbus roots and 101 years of history, eight students collaborated with Althoff and the company’s marketing department on the brainstorming process.

Participating students included Advertising & Graphic Design senior Ezra Hone from Columbus, OH (Groveport-Madison Senior High School), Advertising & Graphic Design senior Heidy Dianakurniawan from Philadelphia, PA (Horace Howard Furness High School), Fashion Design senior Jamell Harris from Whitehall, OH (Whitehall-Yearling High School), Industrial Design senior Casi Douglas from North Canton, OH (Hoover High School), Advertising & Graphic Design senior Jaren Maddock from Columbus, OH, Illustration junior Alexis Schuknecht from Saginaw, MI (Heritage High School), Animation sophomore Chi-Ling Chu from Houston, TX, and Industrial Design sophomore Darrek Robertson from Westerville, OH.

The t-shirts were released Nov. 27, 2013.

After researching and sketching ideas, each student presented the company with a first look at their individual designs. Five artists were selected to move into the second phase and after another round of refining concepts and making presentations, the final 10 designs were selected.

The five students selected to complete final designs were Heidi Dianakurniawan, Casi Douglas, Ezra Hone, Jarren Maddock, and Alexis Shuknecht.

The shirts debuted on Dec. 7 in two A.D. Farrow Co. locations, The Shop at NorthStar in Sunbury, OH, and Downtown Columbus.
