Six Illustration students were accepted into the 2014 Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition, earning them the chance to compete for scholarship money and valuable national exposure.

The competition is in its 34th year and is the biggest national competition for college level illustration students, said Stewart McKissick, professor and chair of Illustration.

More than 8,000 entries are received each year, and only about 300 are accepted into the competition, making the inclusion of six CCAD students a “great honor,” McKissick said.

The CCAD students whose works were accepted into the competition are Illustration seniors Aaron Behnk from Rush, NY (Rush-Henrietta Senior High School), So Yeon (Sophie) Lim from Vancouver, Canada (Semiahmoo Secondary School), and Samuel Veirs from Grand Junction, CO; and Illustration juniors Geoffrey Blasiman from Alliance, OH (Alliance High School), Hannah Ross from Evanston, IL (Evanston Township High School), and Samantha Russell from New Albany, OH (New Albany High School).

The students’ work will be displayed in the galleries of the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York City beginning May 4. About 25 students with the best work will receive scholarship awards.

Illustration junior Hannah Ross who submitted a few pieces said it was a “lovely surprise” to have her cover illustration for the story of Paul Bunyan accepted into the competition.

“It’s amazing to think one tiny homework assignment will be seen by so many,” Ross said.

Illustration senior Aaron Behnk said he’s proud of his work and is taking the opportunity to examine that of his peers and fellow competitors.

“It was really fun to look at the rest of the work, to see what different people from different schools and parts of the country are doing, and [to see] what’s trending in contemporary illustration,” Behnk said. “To have my work run alongside these other great artists is a real honor.”
