Emma Andrews admits that, when it comes to her creative process, she sometimes “flies by the seat of her pants.”
What started as a lingerie collection of silky camisoles and slips morphed into a complete spring line, including dainty dresses, fluffy skirts, and fabulously textured jackets.
“The reality is you have to be flexible,” Emma said. “A lot of people design a garment and then find fabric to suit that, but I might find a fabric I love and it makes me think of something else.”
Her favorite look, a playful burgundy-colored romper paired with a luxe fur jacket, showcases Emma’s hand sewing and attention to detail–two themes that run throughout her collection.
“Everything’s been done before, but it’s that small attention to detail that makes something separate,” Emma said. “I wanted to focus on what makes something special.”
Even surrounded by speedy sewing machines in the fashion labs at CCAD, the Fashion Design senior and Columbus native said that sometimes hand sewing can’t be replaced.
And plus, she added, it’s in her blood. Her grandmother owned a knitting store in England and was an avid cross-stitcher who frequently made clothes for her daughter, Emma’s mom.
“They were so intense and delicate,” Emma said of her mom’s old clothes. “I just thought, ‘Hopefully I’ll be like that someday.'”
The women in her family also served as inspiration—Emma paired fun and casual retro themes with a dusty, natural color palette inspired by a photo of dried flowers to give her customer the freedom to mix and match items from her collection with pieces in their own closets.
“As a woman, it’s hard to wear something without someone automatically assuming what type of person you are,” Emma said. “I definitely wanted to mix things up.”
As Emma looks toward the fashion show on May 9, she can’t help but reflect on the past year and look ahead to what’s next.
“The whole experience has definitely been eye-opening,” Emma said. “I just want to get out there and get going and start getting experience.”
