Appropriately named A Preppy State of Mind, Sarah Wong’s collection feels like a playful coastal vacation. It’s practically ready to wear, noted several jurors at the jury show in February, and is brimming with crisp, on-trend silhouettes, colors, and graphic prints.
Sarah drew inspiration from family beach vacations and from the trends she’s surrounded by at her internship with Tween Brands, a retail company that targets the tween market.
“I’ve been with Tween Brands for over a year so I’m always designing what’s in stores now,” she said. “It’s been the best experience of my life… and I’ve learned so much.”
In addition to being immersed in the latest trends, Sarah said her internship gave her confidence to tackle her biggest challenge coming into her senior year at CCAD: sewing.
Unlike many of her classmates, Sarah had never sewn before coming to CCAD, and she knew it would be an uphill battle.
Now as she looks back on her experience and examines her collection, she said she’s especially proud of how much her sewing has improved.
“It’s been really rewarding to see how much I’ve improved from freshman year to right now,” Sarah said. “I’m so happy with the sewing in my collection.”
While Sarah spent much of her time paying close attention to sewing and construction, bold pattern mixing will define her collection on the runway.
Sarah combined chevron and other geometric prints in vibrant greens, blues, and pinks—a trend she saw in the beach towns that inspired her and at her internship with Tween Brands.
“[Pattern mixing] is fresh,” Sarah said. “My strength as a designer is being able to mix and match different fabrics and prints to make a cohesive collection.”
Sarah’s ready-to-wear collection will light up the runway May 9—will you be there? Don’t miss a minute of the excitement—grab your tickets today.
Sarah is from Cincinnati, OH, and attended Colerain High School.
