Advertising & Graphic Design seniors Karl Fekete, Graham Fisher, and Theresa Hensley took home a Bronze Pencil Award in the 2014 Young Ones Competition on May 6 in New York City for their mobile app Artsee.

The Young Ones Competition is celebrated annually as a part of the One Show’s Creative Week in New York City. Creative Week is the preeminent festival showcasing the intersection of advertising, innovation and creative thinking.

Launched by the One Club in 2010, Creative Week is home to the One Show, Young Ones Competition, Creative unConference, and many other provocative presentations, panels, workshops, and exhibitions. Finalists in the Young Ones Competition are invited to Creative Week where they attend a series of networking events, agency tours, and portfolio reviews.

Fekete said he was “floored” by the honor and was especially excited to network with students from other schools and industry professionals during their trip to New York City.

This year, students were given two prompts. One challenged students to rebrand an existing fashion design company, and the other challenged students to create a campaign around the importance of the arts. A panel of 12 industry professionals from around the world judged the competition and chose the winners.

CCAD students have participated in the festival every year since 1999, said Advertising & Graphic Design Professor Matthew Mohr. Each year, the entire senior Advertising & Graphic Design class responds to the festival prompts, but only a handful of solutions are chosen by CCAD professors to enter the competition.

Seniors Nigel Ewan, Hannah Ross, Jen Sullivan, and Taylor Bense received a merit award for their integrated campaign The Boredom Epidemic, and seniors Anna Marshall and Haley Fischer won two merit awards, one for their brand identity campaign and the other for their collateral design.

“From the beginning, [this project] is a valuable, high-pressure, team-building experience. The students know it’s coming every year, and they seem to thrive on the healthy competition, which translates directly into the professional world,” Mohr said.

“[Participating in this competition is] incredibly important because it places CCAD on an international stage with world-renowned schools.”

The Bronze Pencil Award-winning app, Artsee, allows users to search for and find information about exhibitions, performances, and shows in their area.

“We wanted to create something that was adaptable to every city,” Fisher said. “We looked at what was out there, and there really wasn’t anything that does this.”

In addition to the mobile phone app, Fisher, Hensley, and Fekete also created a nontraditional outdoor media campaign including projections of ballet performances in public places and a downtown ticket kiosk for local art events.

“We’re all very proud of this idea and what we were able to create,” he said. “It feels great for this project and this idea we created to be validated.”

Bense is from Fairport, NY (Fairport High School); Ewan is from Columbus, OH; Fekete is from Columbus, OH (The Graham School); Fischer is from Lawrence, KS (Lawrence High School); Fisher is from Columbus, OH (Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center); Hensley is from Hamilton, OH (Fairfield High School); Marshall is from Richburg, SC (Northwest School of the Arts); Ross is from Evanston, IL (Evanston Township High School); and Sullivan is from Marysville, OH (Jonathan Alder High School).
