Animated GIFs by Illustration Assistant Professor Adam Osgood are on display online and in New York City’s Times Square as a part of Hyundai’s sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament.

The car brand’s Because Futbol digital campaign centers around a Tumblr-powered microsite and includes 120 pieces of original art (including GIFs, quotes, illustrations, and short-form video) that will be displayed alongside user-generated content during the monthlong World Cup.

The series of seven animated GIFs is a first for Osgood, who said Hyundai’s advertising agency found out about his work through his personal Tumblr blog.

“I’ve been able to get a good audience of people interested in my motion illustrations and animated GIFs [through my blog],” Osgood said.

What’s especially exciting, Osgood said, is the connection between his work for Hyundai and his work in the classroom at CCAD.

“I ask my senior Illustration students to maintain an active social media presence, and this commission shows how that can translate into real work,” he said. “It also speaks to the changing nature of illustration from static to kinetic. The Illustration department launched a new Motion for Illustrators course this past spring, and this is exactly the type of work the students were practicing.”
