More than a year after its release, the CCAD student film Lumin is still receiving accolades. It recently took first place in the Society of Illustrators’ 2014 Student Scholarship Competition, the largest national competition for college-level animation and illustration students.
More than 300 works are chosen each year from more than 8,700 entries submitted by college professors nationwide. A jury of professionals, including illustrators and art directors, selects the most outstanding works created throughout the year.
The five-minute black and white film tells the story of a boy who must escape dozens of monsters chasing him for what he carries: light.
The CCAD student filmmakers submitted Lumin to more than 30 festivals internationally and nationally and were accepted to several, including the Austin Film Festival, Chile Monos, Leeds Young Film Festival, Ohio Shorts, taafi, and Sff International Film Festival.
In November 2013, the film won Best of Category and was a strong contender for the Best of Show award at the annual Columbus Society of Communicating Arts Creative Best Awards.
Associate Professor of Animation and Cinematic Arts Tom Richner served as production supervisor. Seventeen students worked on the film: Animation alumnus Victor Dearing (CCAD 2012), 2013 Animation alumni Christopher Campbell, Tyler Crowley, David King, Arianni Kurniawati, Laura Maue, Bekah Nunn, Jonathan Pezzatta, and David T. Reed; Cinematic Arts alumnus Alex Trimpe (CCAD 2012); 2013 Cinematic Arts alumni Alan Becker, Patrick Kain, Lauren Thornberry, and Mariah Ward; and recent graduates Kelly Cumpson (Animation 2014) Grace Kim (Cinematic Arts 2014), and Aaron Zawisa (Cinematic Arts 2014).
