When the 12-day Ohio State Fair was in full swing, our eyes were on the Fine Arts Exhibition—a juried show of works by more than 300 professional and amateur artists from around the state.

Called a “must-see” and “one of the best state-fair shows in recent memory” by the Columbus Dispatch, the exhibition included a strong contingent of CCAD alumni, faculty, and staff artists.

Both juror’s choice awards in the professional division went to artists with ties to CCAD: Hannah Mason-Macklin (CCAD 2014) and Fine Arts Professor John Kortlander.

Kortlander’s award-winning acrylic painting Preview is “loaded with symbols,” wrote the Dispatch. “With objects that resemble theater props, the painting suggests a drama about to unfold.”

Honorable mention in the professional division was awarded to Nicole Crock (CCAD 2010) for her photo collage Tessellate and Adjunct Instructor Nathan Gorgen (CCAD 2012) for Luxury Accommodations, a re-purposed portable toilet adorned with a faux-painted surface.

Awards sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council and McConnell Arts Center of Worthington went to Assistant Director of Graduate Studies Molly Burke (CCAD 2006), Jeffrey Knick (CCAD 2008), Jill Raymundo (CCAD 2004), and staff member Leah Wong.

The show included a short film program with works by Assistant Professor Eric Homan (CCAD 1998), Andrew Ina (CCAD 2006), Lexie Stoia (CCAD 2014), Linda Diec (CCAD 2014), and Liz Roberts (CCAD 2014). Ina’s A Day in the Life of a Ballerina earned him best of show for the program and Earcatcher by Stoia, Diec, and Roberts received the Greater Columbus Arts Council Short Film Award.

Additional CCAD artists in the professional division included Jenny Scranton (CCAD 1975), Paul Emory (CCAD 1978), Judith Steele (CCAD 1985), Richard Lillash (CCAD 1987), Brian Bates (CCAD 1988), Todd Camp (CCAD 1989), Daniel Schreiber (CCAD 1992), Ken Marshall (CCAD 1995), Adjunct Instructor Susan O’Connor (CCAD 1996), Andrew Newbold (CCAD 1998), Christopher Burk (CCAD 1999), Kellie McDermott (CCAD 1999), Georgie Cline (CCAD 2002), Kristin Morris (CCAD 2002), Christine Abbott (CCAD 2005), Admissions Officer Megan Mathie (CCAD 2006), Clair Farris (CCAD 2007), Jason Routson (CCAD 2008), Erinn Bessler (CCAD 2009), Adjunct Instructor Evangelia Phillipidis (CCAD 2009), Molly Savage (CCAD 2012), Adjunct Instructor Carmen Smith (CCAD 2014), Adjunct Instructor Carol Boram-Hayes, Adjunct Instructor Sophie Knee, and Associate Professor Kathy McGhee.

The Youth Arts Exhibition featured works by Ohio students in kindergarten through grade 12. CCAD awarded three scholarships to CCAD’s Saturday Morning Art Classes and one general scholarship to four of the participants.

The Fine Arts and Youth Arts Exhibitions were on display in the newly renovated Cox Fine Arts Center at the Ohio Expo Center through Aug. 3.
