There’s no question that alumnus Roy Doty (CCAD 1942) is still going strong. Even as he approached his 90th birthday this fall, Inspired Lines, an exhibition featuring 60 pieces of his work, opened at The Ohio State University’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum, the largest and most comprehensive academic research facility for cartoon art in the world.

Before the opening, he completed more than 130 full-page, four-color illustrations for an upcoming economics textbook. When asked about his workload, he says with a humble shrug and his signature grin, “I stay busy.”

Which, of course, is a very large understatement. In his 65-year career, Doty has written more than 30 books; illustrated 167; had illustrations featured in the New York Times, Newsweek, Fortune, Business Week, Popular Science, and Elle; and deployed his talents on behalf of advertising clients including Mobil Oil, Macy’s, CBS, Black & Decker, and Ford.

This year, Doty became one of only 13 individuals ever honored with the National Cartoonist Society’s Gold Key award—considered the cartoonists’ hall of fame. But, he says, “The truth is, I’m still trying to be good. No piece is ever good enough. I finish it, and I look at it a year later and say ‘why the hell didn’t I do this?’ Deep down, I’m still trying to be good.”

The story of how Doty got from high school to CCAD to his own freelance studio is best told in his own voice.

“When I was in high school, I drew like every cartoonist,” he says. “Fortunately, I had a good art teacher in high school who thought I was a genius painter, so she sent my paintings to what is now CCAD, and they awarded me a two-year full scholarship, which meant a lot then. After all, this was the Great Depression.”

“I was taught by, among others, Alice Schille, and I can say that my color is only brilliant because of her. But I had the same problem at CCAD that I had when I was in high school: they all wanted me to be a great painter—because back then there was only a fine arts major—but all I ever wanted to do was draw cartoons. I drove them crazy because I was so sure of what I wanted to be.”

“I graduated in 1942 just months after Pearl Harbor, and two days later I ran off with a classmate, Louella Vance, to Chicago to get married. By the end of the year, though, I had been drafted into the Army. In the fifth week of my basic training, I was taken out of the Air Corps and sent first to New Jersey, then to a private mansion on the beach in Georgia.”

“I was a radar man, part of the top secret radar division. While I was there, I was drawing Why We Fight for the camp newspaper, which ran in all Air Force camp newsletters. Then I was flown to New York City, placed on the Queen Mary, and I was now stationed in Paris, living as a cartoonist, drawing for Overseas Woman, Stars and Stripes, and more.”

It was in Paris that Doty developed the style of cartooning that has defined his career—fine lines, bold color, and a lot of detail.

“I left Ohio doing ‘big foot art,’ and I got to Europe doing that,” Doty says. “But all of the artists I was working with in Paris were decorating the page, and I said, ‘You don’t need balloons, gags, or captions to tell a story. You can do without it and still get the laugh. And that is an absolute joy.’”

When the war was over, Doty was discharged with “a nice portfolio and $350 in pay.” He returned to Columbus just long enough to purchase a ticket to New York City and divorce his wife. “She had found religion, and I had found four-letter words; so we parted ways with a kiss, and we always remained friends.”

“The truth is, I came out of the Army wanting to change the world, and I was sure I would,” Doty says. “I came out with something new, and that’s why I got work—because I could take the dullest copy in the world and get a laugh out of it. I started freelancing 65 years ago and haven’t had a job since.”

“I’ve never had a bad year, a slow year. I’ve never been ‘unbusy.’ I’m still busy, and I love it. I work seven days a week. I went to bed at midnight last night, and I’ll go to bed at midnight tonight. What do I have to complain about? As long as I am drawing pictures, I am totally happy. Until I drop dead, I’ll be drawing pictures.”

Fine Arts alumnus Roy Doty (CCAD 1942) will receive the Gold Key Award at the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) annual convention in Boston during Memorial Day Weekend. Recipients of the Gold Key Award are considered to be members of the society’s hall of fame.

In an article on the NCS website, it is written, “Roy Doty’s style has remained largely unchanged throughout his career… and yet it’s never looked dated. As other illustration and cartooning styles fell in and out of fashion, Roy’s clean, simple line work has always looked fresh and current.”

During his 40-plus year career, Doty has illustrated more than 60 books and has had work featured in The New York Times, Newsweek, Fortune, Business Week, Field & Stream, Popular Science, and Elle Magazine. Doty’s client list includes Mobil Oil, Macy’s, CBS, Black & Decker, and Ford among others.

In addition to this award, Doty has also received NCS’s Reuben Illustrator of the Year award in 2006. He is also a six time recipient of The Advertising Council’s Illustrator of the Year award.

In February, Doty served as our 1940s representative for an interview in the CCAD Alumni Newsletter and said, “Be yourself and dedicate yourself to something you think is worth it, even if it’s oddball—especially if it’s oddball! I only do me. And I’ve outlasted everybody.” Read the interview in its entirety here.

The National Cartoonists Society is the world’s largest and most prestigious organization of professional cartoonists. Membership is limited to established professional cartoonists or outstanding persons in an affiliated field. Syndicated cartoonist and CCAD alumnus and board member Jeff Stahler (CCAD 1977) is also a member of NCS as is Illustration department chair C.F. Payne, whose work is frequently featured in prominent U.S. magazines, including Time, Esquire, Rolling Stone, Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Book Review, Mad Magazine, and Reader’s Digest.

CCAD has educated young artists since 1879, so we’ve got a lot of history—not to mention more than 10,000 living alumni. We just can’t resist dipping into their wealth of untold stories. Most recently, we delved into our records to identify a graduate from every decade for which we are lucky enough to have a living alum. We asked them all just one question: What was CCAD like when you were a student?*

Edmund Kuehn (CCAD 1938)
Unfortunately Edmund was a bit under the weather when we went to do our interview, but we had the pleasure of speaking with his wife, Liese Kuehn (who also studied at CCAD), about his time here.
“Edmund had teachers who knew he was unusually talented and helped push him that way. But his fascination with art developed entirely on his own. At CCAD, he studied all the movements and got to know them well. He just took what suited his style.”

Roy Doty (CCAD 1942)
“My teachers at CCAD wanted me to be a great artist, but all I wanted to be was a cartoonist. I hung in there, didn’t change, and it was tough. People will try to change you, and you may not make it. But be yourself and dedicate yourself to something you think is worth it, even if it’s oddball—especially if it’s oddball! I only do me. And I’ve outlasted everybody.”

Joseph Grey (CCAD 1950)
“In the ’40s and ’50s, the school was much smaller, so students could spend a lot of time after classes sitting around and ‘chewing the fat’ with the instructors. It was like a close-knit family that could discuss all types of creativity—dance, music, art, theater, etc. Every student at the school had his or her own vision of how they saw their field—be it fine art, sculpture, architecture, advertising—and how the school provided the means to achieve their dreams.”

J. Luray Schaffner (CCAD 1962)
“We were all kind of free spirits back then. No real worries, although we thought we had the weight of the world on our shoulders. Nothing compared to today. We were extremely lucky.”

Bing Lee (CCAD 1977)
“In four years of college life, I spent most of my time in the V-Hall, a new concrete building, where the classrooms, workshops and the library were under the same roof. I had no problems working on my photographs, ceramics and prints inside a room without windows, I even enjoyed working long hours in such environments that I rarely paid attention to time. On the other hand, I did admire the huge windows in the library. I spent many hours there looking out those windows enjoying the sun and cleansing my mind. The CCAD extra-curricular programs added another dimension. For one year, I got a work-study job as archive assistant at the Columbus Museum of Art and had the opportunity to take close looks at the works of George Bellows and the Ashcan artists. For another year, I joined the CCAD VanArt program, which was sponsored by the Post Office with their donation of two mail trucks. I drove the VanArt II filled with art supplies to teach drawing in nursing homes. (This service is now considered art therapy, but CCAD was experimenting with it more than three decades ago.) Ultimately, the most memorable event was my first Thanksgiving at CCAD. It was like an intimate family dinner in a big office. Since I became a part of the CCAD family, when people asked me ‘Bing, where are you from?’ I said, ‘CCAD, I grew up there in the seventies.’”

Kellie Lewis (CCAD 1989)
“It was the bridge of time where things were going from handmade to computer generated. I got to stand in both worlds.”

Bruce Hull (CCAD 1998)
“I lived through [all the major] technological changes while going to CCAD. Sometimes it was a mixed blessing. On one hand, homework projects could be completed a little faster. On the other hand, the projects could be completed faster only if you had the computing power to do it. There were more than a few times when the computer would crash because a file was too large. And of course it only happened in the middle of the night before it was due. As computers became more prevailent, I saw more students foregoing handwork for digital work. Our instructors would constantly remind us that the computer was just a tool – like a paintbrush – and not to rely too heavily on its use. You gotta love ‘Undo’ though.”

James Griffin (CCAD 2005)
“We were fortunate enough to have all sorts of great new software and computer labs, but also have teachers adept at teaching a great variety of traditional techniques.”

*Ok, actually we asked a lot of questions, but we can’t tell you everything at once! Stay tuned for more from these fascinating interviews.
