The 1985 graduate’s book contains 35 paper dogs ranging from golden retrievers to French bulldogs. Using kirigami, an art similar to origami, the reader can copy a template and follow the steps to create a three-dimensional animal.

“It is truly gratifying to actually see the project I worked on for about a year become a physical reality,” Hayakawa said on his blog. “I do love the weight and touch of the book as well as the design itself, things you couldn’t experience with a digital book.”

Paper Pups is available in bookstores and online.

Hayakawa teaches photography, material studies, and drawing at CCAD. He was born and raised in Japan and works in alternative photography, kinetic sculpture, and paper craft.

We do our best to get most of the news you submit to us onto the CCAD News Blog, but because there are more than 10,000 of you making news all over the world, not everything can make it into the blog. We’re glad to have another venue where we can share everything with you—this newsletter’s classnotes.

You can submit classnotes via the easy-to-use form on the alumni landing page. We only post career-related successes, awards, exhibitions, and publications, but we’d also love to know when you move, get married, or have children—just use that same form.

Now, without further ado, your classnotes from September, October, and November 2012.

Alumnus Kurt Fondriest (CCAD 1985) was featured in the film Operation Rhino, which received a Midwest/Chicago Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Operation Rhino documents the transportation of a ceramic rhino from the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois to Misericordia Heart of Mercy, a center that provides services for adults and children with developmental disabilities. The rhino was then used as part of an artistic and educational project led by Fondriest, an art therapist at Misericordia.

Misericordia residents researched rhinos and met with Chicago Zoological Society rhino keepers and veterinary staff to ask questions and be taught about the care of rhinos within the zoo. The residents also completed a mural of the Serengeti on the ceramic animal.

“Through Operation Rhino, Misericordia residents used the expressive arts as a way to learn about the challenges that rhinos face in the wild and how people can take conservation action to support them,” Fondriest said in a press release.

The residents were then brought to the Brookfield Zoo where they were able to touch and feed one of the rhinos there.

“It was moving to watch Misericordia’s residents interact with Broookfield Zoo’s rhinos. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and something we’ll never forget,” Fondriest said.

Fine Arts alumnus Kurt Fondriest (CCAD 1985) and director of art therapy programs at Misericordia Home recently partnered with Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo for the expressive arts project, ‘Operation Rhino.’ Artists and residents of the home painted a 300-pound rhino sculpture and met the real rhinos at the zoo as part of their curriculum.

“This was a wonderful partnership because it enabled Brookfield Zoo to bring us the sculpture of the rhino, for us to learn about the rhino, write about the rhino, and for it to culminate in the actual sculpture where we had to think up a design to put on the rhino,” Fondriest said in the video. “This project is a wonderful way to utilize the expressive arts. Through art therapy our residents learn that Misericordia is an environment, their homes are an environment, where the rhino lives is an environment [and so is] the living earth. Residents saw that the rhino is something they need to take care of for future residents to enjoy.”

“Our mission at the Chicago Zoological Society is to inspire conservation leadership,” said Matthew Mayer of the Chicago Zoological Society. “Through our partnership with Misericordia and [Operation] Rhino, it’s the men and women of Misericordia who have inspired us.”

The project was detailed on the zoo’s YouTube channel. You can watch it here.

One of the big changes we’ve made recently is to take Alumni Classnotes out of IMAGE magazine and bring them to you on our CCAD News Blog. We do our best to make sure most of the news our alumni submit to us ends up there, but since there are more than 10,000 of you making news all over the world, it’s a tough job to keep up with it all. Ultimately, not everything can make it into CCAD News. What doesn’t, ends up here.

We’ve also changed how you can submit classnotes. Now when news happens, let us know via the easy-to-use form on the alumni landing page. We only post career-related successes, awards, exhibitions, and publications, but we’d also love to know when you move, get married, or have children—just use that same form.

Now, without further ado, your classnotes from July-December 2010.
