Kraft’s paper was “Research and Inquiry: Pedagogical Tools to Engender Responsibility;” Yates presented his paper “Research as Catalyst” in the same session.

The two also participated in the Integrative Teaching International ThinkTank along with Vice President for Academic Affairs Kevin Conlon, Assistant Professor Lori Faist, Assistant Professor and Fine Arts alumna Julie Abijanac (CCAD 1992), and Associate Professor and Fine Arts alumna Tam Peterson (CCAD 1983).

FATE is a national association dedicated to the promotion of excellence in development and teaching of college-level foundation courses. The ThinkTank is part of the FATE conference and includes a facilitated discussion and intensive workshop designed to improve teaching at the college level.

Kraft also presented her paper “Rurality Then and Now: Re-visioning the Landscape in Contemporary Irish Art Practice” at the International Meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies in Chicago, April 10-13.

Alumnus Christopher Madden engraving

Ever look closely at the portrait of Andrew Jackson on a $20 bill or the buildings and portraits featured on special edition coins? Those were all done by artists—and alumnus Christopher Madden happens to be among them.

Madden is a journeyman banknote engraver at the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). The position was well earned; Madden had completed a 10-year apprenticeship as a banknote picture engraver.

During his apprenticeship he served under a master engraver and developed a progressively more complex set of engraving and etching skills.

“At the end of 10 years I then became a member of a very small fraternity of highly skilled craftsmen whose methods and traditions can be traced back to many prominent early American artists such as Asher Durand, Walter Shirlaw, and Paul Revere,” Madden said.

BEP focuses on the development and production of United States currency and other security instruments and is currently the largest producer of government security documents. They completely redesign the Federal Reserve Notes every seven to 10 years—primarily to head off counterfeiters and keep up with special edition pieces.

“Day to day we are in the early stages of designing and engraving concepts for future banknotes,” Madden said. “For example, I recently engraved a new portrait of Andrew Jackson for future currency use and also had the honor of engraving the official portrait of President Barack Obama in 2009.”

Madden’s work requires a level of secrecy along with a great deal of practice and dedication. Madden also points out that, in his opinion, this type of engraving is the strictest and most difficult manner of creating a picture in the world.

“As an engraver, my mandate is to exactly translate a tonal model into matrices of lines, dots, and dashes cut into varying depths and widths that will print faithful images for both aesthetic and security purposes,” Madden explained.

“When my engraving is finished, the plate is used as part of an overall project, numbered, and securely placed into a main vault,” Madden said.

Although his apprenticeship taught him details relevant to the engraving field, he thanks CCAD for prepping him for this professional path.

“The professors planted seeds in my mind that bore the fruit for me as an artist and engraver over the years,” Madden said. “They demanded a level of excellence and an ethic of thinking about design and methodology.”

“Engraving is a beautiful and largely lost art/craft, but in reality I also need to accept that I am ultimately creating a product and not my own art,” Madden said.

To counter that, Madden works on his own paintings. In the last few years he has taken up plein air painting and has a studio at the Griffin Art Center in Frederick, Maryland, where he also teaches classes.

“The biggest difference between my work as an engraver and my painting is I have total creative control over what I make and what I create [with painting],” Madden said. “Also, since engraving is such a demanding discipline, painting allows me to have that push-and-pull ability.”

Junior Fine Arts major Carson Weaver was recently announced as the winner of the Diamond Cellar’s Jewelry Design Contest. Weaver will be given $1,000 to assist in creating the ring she designed and also the opportunity to offer her piece for sale at the Diamond Cellar’s 2012 Designer’s Gala in December.

This is the second year for the competition, which was created as a result of a longstanding relationship between CCAD and the Diamond Cellar.

Thirteen students from instructor Kelly Nye’s jewelry design course submitted ring designs to be judged by Diamond Cellar staff as well as internationally known jewelry designers Michael Bondanza, Steven Lagos, Charles Krypell and Christopher Slowinski.

Before sending their designs off to the judges, students were able to consult with Christine Cooper Hill (CCAD 1987) during a class visit. Hill has been designing and handcrafting fine jewelry for more than 22 years and has had her own business, Christine Cooper Hill Jewelry/Cooper Hill Studio since 2007.

Hill looked over the student’s ring designs, offering advice on marketability, stone use, costs, and overall appeal.

Weaver’s ring will be fabricated using a wax casting process. The setting of the ring will be made of platinum, and the design includes Tahitian pearls and two single-cut round melee diamonds.

The Diamond Cellar will display Weaver’s final drawings at the 2012 CCAD Senior Fashion Show. They will also display work by the judges and Hill.

Diamond Cellar is one of several community clients that CCAD has recently provided significant creative services for, including Scott’s Miracle-Gro, Central Ohio Transit Authority, the Ohio Governor’s office, and Nationwide Insurance.

Creative Arts of Women (CAW) opened their exhibition Creating Our History honoreing women’s history month on March 5, 2012.

The exhibition includes work by 28 CAW members, including many with CCAD connections: Mary Ann Crago (1995 Fine Arts alumna), Linda Diec (Fine Arts adjunct faculty), Helma Groot (1989 Fine Arts alumna), Roxanne Smith-Mansell (1987 Fine Arts alumna), Lisa McLymont (Continuing and Professional Studies instructor), Kristin Morris (1994-2002 Illustration alumna), and Cat Sheridan (2003 Fine Arts alumna and director of Continuing and Professional Studies).

The exhibition was reviewed by Melissa Starker for the Columbus Dispatch. She described several works, noting that “the most straightforward statement of the group comes from Cat Sheridan’s Red Tape. The floor installation, constructed of the titular material, forms a circle of slanted caution lines around the word uterus. With that, she unites the intent of the exhibition and the headlines and frustrations of the moment.”

CAW members are visual artists, performance artists, writers, arts administrators, arts supporters, and art appreciators. The objective of the group is to support each member in her individual career, be involved in community service, have group shows, share new work, and network.

An exhibition that centers on the unique approach to art making through the collaboration and mixing of media will feature 15 artists affiliated with Columbus College of Art & Design.

Alumni, faculty, and staff are all involved in Crossroads, an invitational exhibition at the Schumacher Gallery at Capital University.

Casey Bradley (CCAD 2001), a Fine Arts alumnus and Lab manager at CCAD, developed the exhibition.

“Crossroads is an exhibition devoted to the enduring spirit of the artist as a creative seeker,” Bradley said.

Bradley invited 20 artists to participate in the show. He went through a jurying process with the Schumacher Gallery director and the director’s assistant to choose the work.

“All of the artists were selected based upon the ability of their work to push the boundaries of the materials and the processes that they are working with,” he said.

The final show comprises of 55 pieces with mediums including watercolors, glass, ceramics, printmaking, found objects, and more.

“It is the orchestration methods and interactions with each artist’s materials that allow a sense of discovery to translate to the experience of the viewer,” Bradley said.

Several CCAD faculty were presenters at the recent Assessment in the Arts Conference in Denver, CO.

Associate Provost Char Norman, Dean of Fine Arts and Foundation Studies Julie Taggart (CCAD 1991), and Christopher Yates (CCAD 1987), chair of Foundation Studies, were among the art and academic professionals who shared their first-hand knowledge and experiences. Their presentation, Accountability and Exchange: Using Digital Portfolios for Assessment, focused on CCAD’s use, beginning in 2010, of faculty and student digital portfolios as part of its assessment process. The discussion touched upon the benefits, challenges, and opportunities inherent in the method.

Additionally, Liberal Arts’ Jeannine Kraft, chair of history of art and design, and Julie Posey, chair of science, teamed together to deliver a paper entitled Assessment in the Liberal Arts in the Art and Design College Context.

Held at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, the conference was designed to add to the body of knowledge of assessment of creative academic programs. Focal topics included improvement of student learning, how the arts can be appropriately assessed for accreditation, and techniques of providing assessment feedback.

Meditations: Christopher A. Yates continues through Sept. 12 at Ohio Wesleyan University, Gallery 2011, Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., in Delaware, OH.

Yates, associate professor, Fine Arts and Graduate Studies, chair, Foundation Studies, will hold a closing gallery talk at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9. A reception will follow.

Gallery hours are 8-2 a.m. Monday-Thursday; 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; and 11-2 a.m. Sunday.
