Industrial Design alumnus Peter Wachtel (CCAD 1990) had his invention the Grill Wrangler (formerly known as the Stake) featured on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Leno had Quirky.com founder Ben Kaufman as a guest on March 20. Kaufman brought several inventions, one of them being Wachtel’s Grill Wrangler, which is available on the site. While looking at the Grill Wrangler, Leno remarked, “That is really cool; I would buy that.”

Quirky.com is a website that helps inventors finance and produce their products.

The Grill Wrangler unites three common grilling tools (spatula, tongs, and a fork), so all necessary tools can easily be taken anywhere.

Peter Wachtel’s Grill Wrangler

Wachtel originally submitted his idea to Quirky in 2010. The product is now being sold through venues such as Target, Fab, and ThinkGeek and will soon be available at Williams-Sonoma stores nationwide.

Wachtel is the owner and president of Kid Toyology, which designs and develops items for the toy and entertainment industries. He is a native of Amherst, NY, and attended Sweet Home Senior High.

Robbins’ paintings explore the distance between perception of the world and the actuality of it by pointing out the degrees to which people are separated from direct experience.

Classes are in full swing and the temperature is starting to drop, which can only mean one thing…. Family Weekend & Homecoming is almost here.

This will be the second year that the popular events are combined into one spectacular, action-packed weekend; this year on Oct. 12 and 13.

Last year during and after the event we shared hundreds of photos with our friends on Facebook via our Columbus College of Art & Design page and our CCAD Alumni page.

People tagged and liked the pictures, allowing everyone online to participate. So, what better way to get excited for this year’s event then look back at last year’s photos and comments?

A few that warmed our cold hearts:

“Totally enjoyed the Family Weekend & Homecoming thing—great job,” said alumnus James Walter Elston. “So good to be back at CCAD.”

Alumna Lisa Hetzer said, “we had a great time at the Homecoming/Family/Alumni weekend! Kudos to everyone involved with the planning, great job. What a wonderful surprise to see my favorite teacher, Billie Ingram, being honored at the alumni reception!”

Attendees were excited about the carnival on the quad, the comedy performance, and the homecoming reception, but some were also just as excited for the food.

“Joy Waking up starving and making overdone eggs isn’t fun, heading down to the market to get some good food,” current student Starla Hay said on a post announcing breakfast was beginning.

Sharing photos allowed the people who were there to reminisce (even while the event was still going on), but our hyperactive posting and tweeting meant that those who weren’t able to make the trip to campus got to enjoy it vicariously (at least that’s what we hope).

Alumna Amy Marie Book commented, “I wish I could have gone…miss my CCAD days bad…they were rough while there, but now looking back they were the best years for being myself.”

“I think if I visit now I will get lost,” alumna Sylvia Olmos stated on a picture of the campus. “Campus looks a lot different from 1986 when I started.”

Olmos is right; campus has changed a lot (just another reason to come back). But for those who are worried about getting lost, throughout the day there will be guided tours, so no need to worry.

Those who were watching our posts throughout the day were also a little perplexed by who we were exactly.

Student Alejandro Bellizzi commented that he thought our Faceboook page was alive—“I like this because I don’t understand who you are. It’s as if CCAD is alive and once you are an alumnus/a, you can talk to it like it’s a person. What are you? Are you some kind of art school ghost spirit?”

No, we are not an “art school spirit,” but wouldn’t that be cool? Walking through walls and just appearing places? …We digress. Like last year, Lacey Luce and I (Katlin McNally) will be wandering the streets tweeting and posting—and we think you should too! Seriously, do we have to do everything?

But, anyway, we like Bellizzi’s thinking. We are here to bring the “spirit” of CCAD to you (but not in a creepy poltergeist way)—whether you are among our alumni, a student, a family member, faculty, or staff—we are all CCAD family and on Oct. 12 and 13, everyone is coming together to celebrate. This is something you will not want to miss!

To check out a full listing of events planned for the weekend, please go to our event page. Also, look at photos from last year on our Facebook photo albums here and here.

A creation of Industrial Design alumnus Peter Wachtel (CCAD 1990) seems to be becoming the “official BBQ tool of the summer.” Last year we reported his invention STAKE and his production of it via Quirky. Since then the STAKE has received a lot of publicity and is being sold through venues such as Target, Fab, and ThinkGeek.

Reviews for the product on the popular gadget site ThinkGeek range from “This. Changes. Everything,” to “If Tony Stark ever grilled, this is what he would use.”

“I am a big BBQ fan,” Wachtel said. “I was BBQing in the backyard and was amazed that I needed so many tools to cook—I had my spatula, tongs, a fork, a knife, and even a bottle opener. There was a different tool for every function. I thought, wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to combine all of these needed tools into one multifunction tool that I could easily take anywhere.”

And so Wachtel created the STAKE. He began his design process by taking apart the tools he used while BBQing and creating a rough prototype. After some trial and error, he arrived at his final invention.

Wachtel has also been gaining publicity for his other invention, the Mercado bag, which was designed with farmers’ markets in mind. It is made out of nylon mesh and canvas and has multiple compartments to protect fresh produce from being bruised during transport. The bag is also being sold on Quirky and Fab and has even been featured on the LA Times online blog.

Wachtel is the owner and president of Kid Toyology, which designs and develops items for the toy and entertainment industries.

We do our best to get most of the news you submit to us onto the CCAD News Blog, but since there are more than 10,000 of you making news all over the world, not everything can make it into the blog. We’re glad to have another venue where we can share everything with you—this newsletter’s classnotes.

We only post career-related successes, awards, exhibitions, and publications, but we’d also love to know when you move, get married, or have children—just use that same form.

An invention by Industrial Design alumnus Peter Wachtel (CCAD 1990) has made it through Quirky’s curation, evaluation, and engineering phases and is now available for pre-sale on the community-driven invention production site.

Wachtel’s invention is STAKE, an all-in-one barbeque tool that functions as tongs, a spatula, or a fork. STAKE has been in the Quirky store since June 29 and has nearly 100 pre-sale orders. Once the product’s pre-sale threshold has been met, STAKE will move into production.

Watch STAKE in action here.

Quirky opened in 2009, and helps turn ideas into products. Inventors submit their ideas and fans make suggestions. Twice a week, a new product is released. Confused? Check out this infographic.

Wachtel is the owner and president of Kid Toyology and recently published two e-readers. Learn more about Wachtel here.

Books are available on Amazon.com and Lulu.com.

“I wrote this book because I was a kid once too,” said Wachtel about Kid Toyology. “It was always a wonder to me why most children seem to be so much more creative and alive than the normal adult. Why do we lose this or put it on hold? I have always had a dream to counteract the results of growing old—at least mentally. Wouldn’t it be great to start out old and grow younger as we age?”

Advertising & Graphic Design alumna Sharon Hynes (CCAD 1990) just completed set design for the latest Arhaus catalog through her company Style Scout Co. {SSCo.}. An interview with Hynes was also featured on indie design blog One Sydney Road.

“I had no idea that photo styling existed while I was studying photography and advertising at Columbus Collage of Art & Design,” Hynes said in the interview. “After graduation, I saw a job posting for a photo stylist, and thought the job sounded like the perfect combination of my education, skills and more importantly, it sounded like fun! Lucky me—it was! I was a full time photo stylist for American Greetings for many years, working on catalogs, and other advertising pieces as well as trying my hand at display design for Anthropologie for a while also. And then, after being laid-off twice, I decided to start my own business. That’s when Style Scout was conceived.”

{ SSCo. } is a unique full-service design, planning and production company that elevates ordinary styling projects into highly creative, extraordinary collaborations. The company does everything from tabletop to wardrobe in its photo styling projects.

Before opening the Style Scout doors in 2009, Hynes worked as an American Greetings’ Trend Lab and Color Marketing Group team member and a creative visual display manager at Anthropologie. {SSCo.} clients include Anthroplogie, American Greetings, Lowe’s, Target, Smucker’s, and Walmart among others.

One of the big changes we’ve made recently is to take Alumni Classnotes out of IMAGE magazine and bring them to you on our CCAD News Blog. We do our best to make sure most of the news our alumni submit to us ends up there, but since there are more than 10,000 of you making news all over the world, it’s a tough job to keep up with it all. Ultimately, not everything can make it into CCAD News. What doesn’t, ends up here.

We’ve also changed how you can submit classnotes. Now when news happens, let us know via the easy-to-use form on the alumni landing page. We only post career-related successes, awards, exhibitions, and publications, but we’d also love to know when you move, get married, or have children—just use that same form.

Now, without further ado, your classnotes from July-December 2010.

Alumna Lisa Ohmer (associate 1990), owner of European Papers in Columbus, was recently interviewed in the Columbus Dispatch’s weekly section Shop Talk.

Ohmer’s store combines an art-supply store, gift shop, and gallery—with space for workshops. “We offer materials for artists concentrating on collage and bookbinding—alternative arts,” Ohmer said. “So you’ll find jewelry, tiny metal pieces, pressed flowers, ribbons, … basically anything you can’t find in a normal art store.”

Ohmer sells all over the world through her shop’s website, but some of her most familiar clients are CCAD students. “They’re usually looking for unusual materials for their projects for class. They do a little bookbinding. … They’ll buy a lot of the funky steampunk stuff—anything they think is interesting. One kid who comes in told us we’re his secret weapon, which is kind of fun.”

When the pedestrian bridge that connected the City Center Mall to the former Lazarus building was removed, a large hole was left in the marble saw tooth façade above the storefront. Once the hole was filled with pre-cast concrete Ulibarri stepped in to paint the pre-cast to look exactly like the marble.
