CCAD faculty and alumni will exhibit their work at Wehrle Gallery at Ohio Dominican University, March 17–April 12.

This is: on the subject of art was curated by Fine Arts alumna and Assistant Professor Julie Abijanac (CCAD 1992) and features work from 11 CCAD-affiliated artists including Assistant Professor Shannon Benine; visiting faculty Matthew Flegle; adjunct faculty Nicole Gibbs; Director of Exhibitions Michael Goodson; Fine Arts alumna and Assistant Professor Danielle Julian Norton (CCAD 1999); Assistant Professor Kelly Malec-Kosak; adjunct faculty Andrea Myers; Fine Arts alumna and adjunct faculty Susan Li O’Connor (CCAD 1996); Fine Arts alumnus and Associate Professor Tim Rietenbach (CCAD 1977); Fine Arts alumna and adjunct faculty Mariana Smith (CCAD 2002); and adjunct faculty Melissa Vogley-Woods.

“Janette Knowles, the gallery director, asked if I would be interested in curating a show, and I nervously said sure, but I instantly knew I wanted to put a show together focused on the subject of art,” Abijanac said. “My goal was to bring together a strong group of artists who have very strong ideas about their subject matter as well as their approach in visually communicating that information. Along with this, I wanted to have an art historian to align and connect this idea historically, which is done in the foreword for the show.”

The foreword was written by Assistant Professor Carla Cesare, who describes the relationship between the artists, their message and medium, and reality.

There is an opening reception March 17, 1–3 p.m.

Seven CCAD faculty members will come together and show their work at Columbus’ Cultural Arts Center in a group exhibition, FUNCTION, Jan. 9–Feb. 8, with an opening reception Friday, Jan. 11, 6–8 p.m.

“The exhibition looks at the idea of function,” said Michael Goodson, CCAD’s exhibitions director. “We have faculty that have a design background and faculty that have a fine arts background in this show, and they are coming together to look at functionality and dis-functionality for items designed to function and those based on the idea of function.”

Goodson helped organize the exhibition and will show his work along with Associate Professor and Industrial Design alumnus Davis Burghy (CCAD 1989), Foundation Studies and Fine Arts instructor Matthew Flegle, Dean of the School of Design Arts and Industrial Design chair Tom Gattis, Professor and Industrial Design alumnus Joel Gundlach (CCAD 1986), Assistant Professor and Fine Arts alumna Danielle Julian Norton (CCAD 1999), and Associate Professor and Fine Arts alumnus Tim Rietenbach (CCAD 1977).

Work will range from Burghy’s deconstructed stair banisters to Flegle’s illustrations of colliding objects. For more information and gallery hours, visit the Cultural Arts Center’s website.

We do our best to get most of the news you submit to us onto the CCAD News Blog, but because there are more than 10,000 of you making news all over the world, not everything can make it into the blog. We’re glad to have another venue where we can share everything with you—this newsletter’s classnotes.

You can submit classnotes via the easy-to-use form on the alumni landing page. We only post career-related successes, awards, exhibitions, and publications, but we’d also love to know when you move, get married, or have children—just use that same form.

Now, without further ado, your classnotes from June, July, and August 2012.

He was recently profiled in All4You, a contemporary culture magazine based in Croatia.

The interview discussed everything from his original inspiration for becoming an artist to his everyday challenges and successes.

He connected with the magazine through a friend living in Croatia and immediately became involved with some of their current art projects.

“Once you start traveling you meet so many people and have so many opportunities,” Phillips said. “You begin to realize that the world is filled with passionate people.”

Phillips recently signed with a licensing publisher that will help him manage his marketing and promotions so he can continue his illustration and painting work fulltime.

“Being an artist has always been about the love of creating,” Phillips said.

They can be found working on branding or pulling together a commercial or photograph. They’re our alumni, and they work for one of the leading insurance companies in the country, Nationwide. We recently got a chance to chat with four CCAD grads about what it is like to work with fellow alumni at Nationwide.

Meet Brand/Reputation Director Tara Roe (Illustration, 1999), Campaign Manager Pamela Watkins (Advertising & Graphic Design, 1983), Creative Director Marc Lincewicz (Illustration, 1992), and Multimedia Senior Coordinator Mary Kay Kemper (Advertising & Graphic Design, 1991).

Q) What is it like to work with other CCAD alumni?

Tara Roe (TR): It’s fun! There is a common understanding of design and color because we all had the same foundation courses. CCAD grads have a lot of pride in their work and it helps Nationwide’s design continue to grow and evolve.

Pamela Watkins (PW): It’s great to find out someone is a graduate of CCAD—because of foundation courses and instructors, you immediately have a bond with a co-worker. It is also fun to see where we have landed; our careers can take such diverse courses.

Marc Lincewicz (ML): I guess I would say that when I discover that someone I’m working with has graduated from CCAD it forms sort of an instant bond. We have an understanding that we both went through a similar learning experience and probably have similar levels of understanding with regards to finding creative solutions to complex problems. It’s sort of that unsaid wink and smile that we get each other.

Mary Kay Kemper (MK): It’s great to re-connect with people I went to school with and to meet other alumni. It’s almost like they get it and they have a slightly better work ethic then others (at times).

Q) Why do you think Nationwide has a lot of CCAD alumni?

TR: Nationwide is a great place to work! We have a great creative culture within our design teams and they are encouraged to challenge ideas and push the envelope. There are also a variety of projects and opportunities to move within the company.

PW: There are so many opportunities at Nationwide that incorporate a part of your education from CCAD. We have great creative teams. Having both CCAD and Nationwide as such a big part of Columbus’ culture, it only makes sense that so many of us end up here.

ML: Some people may be surprised to learn that Nationwide recognizes the impact that strong creativity has on our ability to communicate with our members. In my experience, on the design side of my training, CCAD taught me to always create with users in mind. People may be unaware that Nationwide sells much more than just auto insurance. Our in-house creative also consists of an internal photography department, web and interactive teams, video production, photo retouching, and we’re even moving towards 3D modeling. I also think Nationwide understands that CCAD turns out quality people who are prepared to take on a variety of creative challenges. Finally, the combination of the company wanting to be a creative leader and having a leading creative institution in the same city simply works well together.

MK: A big perk is having Nationwide located conveniently near the school. I was out of state for a while and when I returned to find work in Columbus I knew having a CCAD education on my resume would be a big benefit.

Remodeled Nationwide plaza/lobby

Q) Any advice for current students or fellow alumni who want to become involved at Nationwide?

TR: I started at Nationwide as an intern after attending a job fair just before graduating. My advice is to show up to job fairs and make connections. It truly is a key to building your network. It’s all about who you know. That will help you get the time to prove yourself to a potential employer. Have a strong portfolio, practice interviewing, and continue to push yourself creatively.

PW: Never close the door on what you might bring to the table as a result of your excellent education at CCAD. After a long career in graphic design, my first job at Nationwide was as a print buyer. That opened so many doors, and now I’m a campaign manager for Nationwide Financial, who would have thought!

ML: It can be a long, hard, and competitive process to break into Nationwide. The best approach is to be willing to start in a junior position and work your way up. If you are an alumnus with experience, your book needs to show serious talent and a commitment to your craft. Either way, a candidate’s book needs to be excellent, clean, and professional.

MK: A good way is to start as a contractor and test the water, see if Nationwide is right for you while the company will see if you will work out. I contracted for a while before going full time.

Q) Why do you love your job?

TR: I love managing a team of campaign managers and working daily with designers and writers. Although I’m no longer designing myself, I know that I need to stay close to it. Creative people bring so much more energy to the table.

PW: I still get to be a huge part of the creative process without doing the actual designs. I co-lead projects from strategy through completion. I’m always working on various platforms from collateral to conferences to web presence. I still get to partake in the background I love, while learning new things and developing new relationships every day.

ML: I love that Nationwide offers more creative opportunities than many people realize. I love the variety of creative challenges—there’s something new each day. I’ll be honest, I love a steady paycheck; the freelance world wasn’t for me, although I understand the corporate world is certainly not for everyone. I also like that what I do plays a small part in helping people get their lives back together after a problem. This company believes in the success of our city and our community.

MK: I just love it here and love the people! It’s a great creative environment!

Q) What past experiences do you share and remember from being a student at CCAD? How has this impacted your professional career?

TR: I do lunch with Marc Lincewicz. We challenge each other to work on our art outside of Nationwide since we are both in management roles. I continue using my Color Concept and 2D skills in creating cards and occasionally selling them at the CCAD Art Sales, and Marc has showed his drawings/paintings in local art galleries. It’s great to have a fun, creative full-time gig, but also express our art on the side.

PW: All nighters! I worked part time, so my time was valuable and every minute counted. That taught me the discipline it takes to run a large campaign, work with so many teams, and balance budgets and deadlines. I also have an eye for what works and what doesn’t from messaging through design and that doesn’t come naturally. My education taught me to look at the details.

ML: My experience at CCAD was about constant work, a ton of pressure, and deadlines. I learned those deadlines had to be met. (Even the time I was at the hospital at 3 a.m. getting stitches for an Exacto knife cut.) It was an endless period of trial and error, of reworking and refining. I remember on my orientation day, President Cazani said to the freshmen, “Look to your left, look to your right, those people will not be with you on graduation day.” I knew at that moment I was probably facing a tough four and half years (it took 4.5 years to earn a BFA when I attended CCAD). But the program being that tough taught me that I could take on seemingly impossible challenges. While I was never the smartest or the most talented artist, I knew I could hold my own. That core idea has stayed with me during my 17 years with Nationwide. It also applies to my fine art work that I do outside of the office.

Columbus College of Art & Design is getting off campus with an exhibition comprised entirely of CCAD faculty, alumni, and senior staff. Looking Forward, at the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio, is curated by the latest addition to the CCAD family Director of Exhibitions Michael Goodson.

The exhibition, which opens Jan. 21, includes work by Julie Abijanac (assistant professor), Carol Boram-Hays (adjunct faculty), Matthew Flegle (foundation studies and fine arts instructor), Dennison Griffith (CCAD president), Danielle Julian Norton (assistant professor and 1999 Fine Arts alumna), Michael Litzau (adjunct faculty and 2004 Fine Arts alumnus), Kelly Malec-Kosak (assistant professor), Ric Petry (director of graduate programs), Tim Rietenbach (associate professor and 1977 Fine Arts alumnus), and Mariana Smith (adjunct faculty and 2002 Fine Arts alumna).

“Putting together this exhibition has been an affirmation of the great work being done in my new home town. In the end, the exhibition is a meditation on the harmony that is created when we share a starting and a finishing point and the dissonance that pushes us along the path in between,” Goodson said.

The exhibition will be open Jan. 21—May 20, 2012.

A curator’s talk and gallery walk is Jan. 22, 2 p.m. and the artists’ talk and walk will be March 11, 2 p.m.

Suite42, a collaborative co-founded by Fine Arts alumna Danielle Julian-Norton (CCAD 1999), is having an open studio exhibition in Dresden, Germany of current work completed while in residence there.

A reception is 4-6 p.m. Sunday, July 24 in the Geh8 studio of Julian-Norton, an assistant professor of Fine Arts and Graduate Studies, and Studio42 collaborator Tarrah Krajnak. A brief artists’ talk starts at 5 p.m in the Dresden facility.

Their performance-based projects explore the struggle of the artist within a contemporary context and the process of collaboration itself. Invented characters are mined from the history of conceptual performance art and popular film then displaced within absurd narratives, which reference the artist at work, the psychology of relationships, and the tension of meaning and meaninglessness as a central dilemma.

The duo’s work recently was reviewed by Nadja Sayej, the host and producer of ArtStars*, a web-TV show about the art world and a New York Times writer.

Savej describes Studio42′s stop-motion video “The Stairs That Do Not Care” (2011) as “showing the artists falling down a flight eerie, spiraling black iron stairs donning white pantyhose, cotton dresses, falling down backwards from the tip of the Technical Museum in the heart of cloudy Dresden, a small German town just two hours south of Berlin. They could very well be stunt actors – and they’ve got the bruises to prove it, not to mention their feet powdered with dirt and dust.”

Illustration alumnus Damian Ward (CCAD 1999) landed the latest children’s story written by Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow, co-authors of Hollywood films Money Talks, Cheaper by the Dozen, Garfield, Garfield 2, and Toy Story—for which they received an Academy Award nomination.

Captain Cur & Wonder Flea tells the story of downtrodden dog and his new pal Wonderflea and their adventures through Brooklyn. By the end of the journey, the dog renames himself Captain Cur.

Ward’s biography for the book reads, “Damian Ward lives a peaceful life in Dayton, Ohio, sitting in his rocking chair, watching the sunset and acting like he’s old enough to look good doing it. Somehow his wife graciously puts up with him. He taught for several years at Colonel White High School for the Arts and continues to do workshops with city youth.” Learn more about Ward on his website.

A portion of the proceeds from this book is being donated to The Cygnet Foundation, which will in turn direct the proceeds to welfare organizations including UNICEF and the Animal Rescue Fund.

What does it feel like when a college is good? Not just ok, but really good?

To be honest, at CCAD, we’re starting to think we know. Of course it’s great to have a compact, attractive campus right in the heart of downtown. Lots of new talent arriving every semester. Strong fundraising, with committed donors and dedicated volunteers. Insightful, thought-provoking conversations going on all over the place.

But what comes of all this after students graduate and leave campus? That‘s what’s making us feel extra-great this spring, so we’re putting it right up front in this issue. A college’s truest measure is the accomplishments of its alumni—and we’re ready to brag.

Nathan Greno (Associate 1993–1996) made his feature film directorial debut with a movie that not only updated some hoary gender clichés, but also topped the box-office rankings for weeks. … more

Package designer Michael Carney (CCAD 2004) won a 2011 Grammy. (For his work on an album by an Ohio band, no less!) …more

Je Jung (CCAD 1998) and Rujira Lawonvisut (CCAD 1999) are pulling down raves in places like Vanity Fair as they take their fashion line global. …more

Corey Favor (CCAD 2002) is back on campus at the center of a revival of CCAD’s Black Student Leaders Association—and he’s brought Marshall Shorts (CCAD 2006) with him. …more

Feeling really good yet? There’s more. Don’t delay, start reading!

Warm regards,

Dennison W. Griffith

You might say that Fashion Design alumni and husband-and-wife team Je Jung (CCAD 1998) and Rujira Lawonvisut (CCAD 1999) have done well—but it would be a major understatement. Between the two of them, they’ve designed for Gap, Theory, and Urban Outfitters. Last year, they debuted their own fashion line, WRKROOM, during New York Fashion Week. Now WRKROOM is on clothing racks in eight U.S. states and recently went international, finding a spot on the shelves at Mob.F, a multi-brand store in Thailand.

People are talking. Exciting people. Here’s a sample.

Vanity Fair: “Their double-breasted jackets and sporty anoraks are the kind of thing you want to wear every day, but their tissue-weight T-shirts steal the show…The careful construction and easy versatility of each piece makes for a wearable collection of modern essentials.” (September 16, 2009)

Thrillist: “WRK’s a fashion-forward, nose-to-tail line whose travel-friendly details are designed to help you live a life of global rootlessness.” (January 26, 2010)

Bangkok Post: “WRKROOM boasts collections which exhibit this modern era’s simplicity and shaped wardrobe staples with refined vintage touch. Its garments are designed with a combination of subtle details and fabrications to help project intricate and mature style for discerning clients.” (December 27, 2010)

Asian News Network: “And while WRKROOM is a men’s line, the label gets a lot of women in its Asian stores. ‘In the US a men’s line is a men’s line, but here it’s more open. If people like something they buy it,’ said Je Jung.” (January 21, 2011)

The Ohio Arts Council (OAC) recently announced that Danielle Julian Norton, an assistant professor of Fine Arts and Graduate Studies, is the recipient of an Individual Excellence Award.

OAC’s excellence awards are peer recognition of creative artists for the exceptional merit of a body of work that advances or exemplifies the discipline and the larger artistic community. The awards support artists’ growth and development and recognize their work in Ohio and beyond in 13 different disciplines.

“OAC is an amazing, supportive resource for artists and the imaginative,” Julian Norton said. “OAC staff genuinely care for Ohio artists, and I would not be the artist I am today with their support.”

Julian Norton (CCAD, 1999) is one of 32 Individual Excellence Award recipients announced in 2011. “The council has been essential to building my career as an artist,” the alumna said. She credits CCAD and OAC with generating a productive creative culture, education, and economy. “I feel lucky to be here,” she said.

OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically.

One of the big changes we’ve made recently is to take Alumni Classnotes out of IMAGE magazine and bring them to you on our CCAD News Blog. We do our best to make sure most of the news our alumni submit to us ends up there, but since there are more than 10,000 of you making news all over the world, it’s a tough job to keep up with it all. Ultimately, not everything can make it into CCAD News. What doesn’t, ends up here.

We’ve also changed how you can submit classnotes. Now when news happens, let us know via the easy-to-use form on the alumni landing page. We only post career-related successes, awards, exhibitions, and publications, but we’d also love to know when you move, get married, or have children—just use that same form.

Now, without further ado, your classnotes from July-December 2010.

Art of Illustration, opens March 5 at Rivet Gallery, 1200 N. High St. in Columbus, and continues through March 25. An opening awards presentation and reception begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5.

This year’s show is organized by five Illustration majors: seniors Alex Alvarado and Noel Ang, juniors Lexie Holliday and Brianne Schulze, and sophomore Andrew Thompson. They secured a panel of professional alumni jurors—Linda Bittner (CCAD, ’88), Tim Bowers (CCAD, ’79), Eric Fortune (CCAD, ’99), and Scott Hull (CCAD, ’77)—as well as Illustration Chair C. F. Payne to winnow the 164 entries down to 38. Per tradition, judging took place in Payne’s home.

“Our main focus this year was to get the community more involved,” Schulze said. “In the past, the show was held in one of CCAD’s galleries, so we figured the most obvious solution was to find a gallery off campus.” The Illustration department is excited about the gallery’s involvement because the student work, opening reception, and awards presentation will be showcased during Columbus’ popular monthly Gallery Hop.

Payne describes the jurying progress as “very regimented and very tough once selections get down to the final level.” All students submit their entries in a digital format. For jurying, the student organizers project the images for the judges to see, then track each round’s selections and tally the overall winners, a process that lasts several hours.

Awards, including prizes from various sponsors, will be presented for best of show as well as first, second and third place. Additionally, five selections identified as “judges favorites” will receive an original work of art from the respective judge.

This year’s sponsors include Chipotle, Cameron Mitchell, Kroger, and R Designs and Printing. CCAD student, a senior majoring in Illustration, designed the 2011 AOI poster.

Payne is pleased that the student-led tradition continues to grow and sees the move to an off-campus gallery as a positive development. “Having AOI in a gallery adds some prestige,” he said.

Fine Arts alumna Samantha Bennett (CCAD 1999) was recently featured in Ohio’s Columbus Dispatch for her hopeful portraits commemorating lost loved ones.

In an article written by Gina Potthoff, Bennett talks about her art, her desire to bring hope, and the disease that could have prevented the pursuit of her passion. As an infant, parts of her fingers were amputated due to bacterial meningitis; however, that didn’t stop her urge to create. By age 6, she was drawing with her thumb and index finger.

“Most of the time, I don’t feel like I’m handicapped. Most of my life, I’ve dealt with it myself. … To be who I am as a person, I have to stay positive,” Bennett said in the article. “We don’t know why these things happen. But everything happens for a reason.”

Bennett’s paintings are described as “bright and colorful” and filled with “feeling;” a description that matches her attitude. Her story will be posted next month on the National Meningitis Association website. She hopes her story will be an inspiration to others to protect themselves from the rare but often deadly disease that impacted her life.

Alumnus Jeff Pierson (CCAD 1999) was recently featured in West Virginia’s Charleston Gazette for his full-time work as director of arts for the state Division of Culture and History and his after-hours illustration work.

In the article written by Sandy Wells, Pierson tells his story—how his love for art took him from Charleston, West Virginia to CCAD and back again. We’ve published a portion of it here.

“In grade school, I remember getting in trouble for the first time when the teacher called my mom and told her they had a problem with me,” Pierson said in the article. “I wouldn’t color in the coloring books. I had a moral dilemma at age 5 that if I didn’t do the drawing, I didn’t want to color it.”

“Originally, I wanted to be an animator for Disney,” Pierson continued. “I would watch Disney movies and old cartoons. I studied how the cartoon was made. When we were able to get VCRs later, I would pause them and watch frame by frame and see how things would move. I was fascinated by that process of animation.”

“I went to Columbus College of Art & Design—the place to go for animation—and actually did an internship with Disney. About the same time, I met Chris Payne, C.F. Payne, a guy coming in to teach illustration at the college. He turned me to illustration … Animation class was incredibly difficult. You draw and draw and draw just to get a couple seconds of film. With illustration, you draw once and you are done.”

“I [currently] work for the Division of Culture and History as the director of arts … I’m an arts administrator … I administer grants. If you look across the country, West Virginia ranks in the top 10 in arts funding. That’s my job. We find money and fund arts.”

“I make time to satisfy my love for illustration. I stay up late and get up early on weekends. I do a lot of commissioned portraits for people as Christmas gifts … I try to draw as much as possible. Drawing is second nature to me.”

Click here to read Pierson’s story in its entirety.
