We do our best to get most of the news you submit to us onto the CCAD News Blog, but since there are more than 10,000 of you making news all over the world, not everything can make it into the blog.
Fashion Design alumnus and CCAD Fashion Icon award winner Edward Buchanan (CCAD 1988-1991) was featured in the March issue of W Magazine for his line, Sansovino 6.

Listed in the Ahead of the Class article for “up-and-coming labels [that] are keeping fashion on its toes,” Buchanan’s feature focused on how his line came to be. “Two years ago, while working as a designer for Sean John, Edward Buchanan discovered that his favorite Milan knitwear factory was getting clobbered by its competition in China,” J.J. Martin wrote for the magazine. “In an attempt to keep the company’s doors open, Buchanan launched Sansovino 6.”

Martin continued, “This spring he has taken on the world of jeans. Indigo knits, washed and distressed by an Italian denim specialist, have been used to create unisex cutoff shorts, jackets, and various pant silhouettes. The five pocket boot cut could be mistaken for a stylishly worn-in pair of Levi’s, but done up in fine-gauge cotton knit, it feels as snuggly as sweats.”

Buchanan enrolled at CCAD in 1988 to study retail advertising and fashion illustration. After CCAD, he moved to New York City in 1992 to pursue a career in fashion design. While taking courses at Parsons School of Design, Buchanan worked with prestigious clothing lines Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, J.Crew, and Michael Kors. In 1995, Buchanan moved to Europe as design director of luxury accessories line Bottega Veneta. Prior to arriving at Bottega, the collection was primarily luxury accessories. Buchanan moved to Milano, Italy in 1995, and worked for Bottega Veneta for six years. He was hired to develop a capsule collection of knitwear and leather goods to round off the world of Bottega Veneta. The collection was an instantaneous success and helped the brand gain popularity in the ready-to-wear luxury accessories market.

Sound the alarms! The first video is up! What a relief.

After months of editing, making changes, and finishing touches, the Edward Buchanan interview is live. It was a great learning experience.

The problems we encountered along the way weren’t as extreme as the James Alicia piece (where we recorded over the footage from one camera), but we had our fair share. Storytelling was my biggest concern, and then the editing, and finally the stylizing.

I am excited to share with you the story of his success. He was so fun to interview, and it was truly inspiring. While I am not a fashion major, he gave me hope for my future, and made me appreciate my school a whole lot more. Ed is an exciting person, and after months of working on four minutes of footage, I never got bored of his voice.

Well, I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed creating it!

Expect a couple more videos in the next few months!

I am currently finishing up the editing of the Edward Buchanan interview. It was a long and exciting journey for this one! Many changes have been made, countless hours of swapping this, swapping that, deleting this, adding that.

Soon will you all see what a great person Edward is and how CCAD played a role in his future.

While we’re on the topic of editing, let me tell you a little about it!

Editing is the most important aspect of the video process. If you just post the raw footage, it is terribly boring, uneventful, and long. An editors job is basically the same job as a storyteller (or a magician). He or she needs to cut down the video and make it a proper pace, put nice music to it, put images and video on top of the video to hide the cuts, etc.

The editor of almost every single documentary and interview cuts the video down to a small amount from hours or even DAYS worth of footage. The viewer doesn’t notice this because of the editors skill at hiding it.

The interviewee comes to secretly respect the editor upon viewing the final product. The interviewee might be a stutterer, might say “uhhh” a lot, might cough here and there, or whatever. The editor will take those out, and make him sound like a gentleman and a scholar.

Not to say everyone does those things when they are interviewed, but you’d be surprised as to how many do.

I would bet a whole lot that those interviews with the president on CNN and what not weren’t just ONE take. Sometimes they are, yes, but everyone makes mistakes, and it’s the media editor’s job to hide that.

Do you watch the news and say “wow, that was edited really well”. Nope.

Do you watch basketball games on tv and say that? Didn’t think so.

I suggest you take a harder look at the editing next time you watch something, it can be really interesting what you’ll catch.

I hope you don’t catch any errors in the Ed interview though. And you won’t, because I edited it.

I have started the longest part of the process, the editing. While it is the most time consuming, it also my favorite.

It’s a beautiful thing really. Being able to take hours worth of footage and cut it down to three to five minutes. It’s definitely my favorite part. Chad and I decided to stylize the videos and make them artsy and new and fresh. These will be fun to watch.

Edward Buchanan (CCAD '88-'91)

I ‘m excited to release the Ed Buchanan interview within the next couple weeks and show you what an awesome person he is. Before that happens though, I need to present the video to Resource Interactive and see what they think about it.

I love working with them. It’s a great experience. They are the best interactive ad agency in the Midwest, and my brother is there to give advice as part of Resource, so I’ve got that going for me (Caddyshack reference).

Stay tuned! Big things are coming, big, big things.

Like … New York City big.

Edward Buchanan is to be honored as the recipient of CCAD’s second-annual Alumni Fashion Icon award at the 2010 Senior Fashion Show on Saturday, May 8.

In 2001, Buchanan partnered with fellow Bottega Veneta designer Manuela Morin to release LEFLESH, an independent line fusing knitwear and ready-to-wear garments that brought worldwide success to both Buchanan and the brand. Two years later Buchanan launched another line, Sansovino6, and showcased his fall/winter 2011 collection of Sansovino6 during Milan and Paris fashion weeks. Sansovino6 is sold in Milan, Paris, Berlin, and Tokyo boutiques.

Buchanan joins Amy Butler, class of ’88, as an Alumni Fashion Icon award recipient.

By Melissa Ricksecker

Edward Buchanan's Sansovino6

I’m just going to come out and say it: I lust after Edward Buchanan’s Sansovino6 line. I want to touch it, feel it, WEAR it.

The luxurious knitwear is chic and cutting-edge style, but wearable. I imagine myself draped in Sansovino6 and sitting sipping coffee on a sidewalk in Milano, or hanging out with friends drinking a glass of wine in the Short North.

Don’t get me wrong, I have fallen in love with looks I’ve seen on runways in Europe and the US, but to imagine myself in them, I have to imagine a fictional character to be and a fantastic world to place myself in. (As much as I fantasize about being so, I am not an international spy nor the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland.)

Edward’s designs are exquisite and, well, of this world. A really good part of this world.

Edward Buchanan, the 2010 Alumni Fashion Icon Awardee

Edward is like that too, which is probably one of the reasons international brands and folks like Jennifer Lopez and Sean Combs trust him as a fashion consultant.

I have gotten to know him the 21st century way—we are friends on facebook, which is a very convenient way to catch someone who is one day in his studio in Milano, and the next showing at Fashion Week in Paris.

I tried to hook him up with another friend, the noted fashion photographer Ed Kavishe, who is publisher and CEO of Fashion Wire Press, when I thought both would be in Paris at Fashion Week. Ed K was indeed there, photographing the runways for Paris Haute Couture Week; Edward B was in Milano getting ready to show his collection in Paris Ready-to-Wear Week, which happens a different week altogether. Silly me.

Edward Buchanan's Sansovino6

At least I managed to hook them up through facebook, and they’ll meet at the CCAD Senior Fashion Show on May 8, when Edward receives the 2010 CCAD Alumni Fashion Icon Award. Oh well, if not Paris, Columbus.

A little about Ed:

Edward Buchanan enrolled at CCAD in 1988 to study retail advertising and fashion illustration. After CCAD, Buchanan moved to New York City in 1992 to further pursue his dreams of becoming a fashion designer.

Early in his career, he worked with prestigious clothing lines Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, J.Crew, and Michael Kors. In 1995, luxury accessories line Bottega Veneta hired Edward as its design director. He added knitwear and leather goods to the brand and launched the line into the Italian, Japanese, and American markets.

In 2001, Buchanan partnered with fellow Bottega Veneta designer Manuela Morin to release their first independent line, LEFLESH, fusing knitwear and ready-to-wear garments with handbags and shoes, a look that brought worldwide success to both Buchanan and the brand.

Edward’s most recent undertaking is the fall/winter 2010/2011 collection for Sansovino6 a line he launched in 2003. Sansovino6 is sold in Milan, Paris, Berlin, and Tokyo boutiques.

Edward Buchanan's Sansovino6

I hope you get to meet Edward at the CCAD Senior Fashion Show. If you don’t have your tickets yet, get on it and buy them online at www.ccad.edu/fashion.

And be sure to check in for next week’s blog, when Miss Amanda describes the arduous task of getting a makeover—come on folks—she had to experience first hand what the models go through to get ready for the runway!

Cheers,

Melissa
