CCAD will host work, for the 26th time, from local young artists, grades seven through 12, in the 2013 Central Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibition, Jan. 18–Feb. 2.

“CCAD’s investment in the local community is critical as we aim to support the development and enrichment of the creative community in which we reside,” said Densil R.R. Porteous II, CCAD’s director of admissions. “This event presents a great opportunity to recognize and nurture the creative talents of students in our area and to further encourage students to pursue their creativity—for they are our creative future.”

There were 1,400 individual works and portfolios submitted by 415 artists for judging and 104 were selected for the exhibition, including paintings, photographs, ceramics, graphic design projects, drawings, sculptures, and multimedia works.

A total of 231 individual pieces and 26 art and photography portfolios were chosen for recognition in the competition, with Gold and Silver Key awards and honorary salutes. Fifty students received a Gold Key award and will be allowed to send their work to New York for national judging. Seniors are eligible for scholarships at participating art and design colleges and universities throughout the country.

The National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards date back to 1923 and are the oldest and largest student art awards recognition program in the U.S.—and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. The awards have a roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, and many more.

There will be an awards ceremony Jan. 27 for the students and their families. Visit CCAD’s event page for more exhibition details including a list of student winners.

The first of anything is always exciting and our first MFA class is no different. CCAD’s inaugural master of fine arts class will be graduating this spring, but not before they exhibit their work in First: The 2012 New Projects MFA Thesis Exhibition.

Eleven graduating MFA students will display their final theses March 30–April 27. Works in the exhibition will range from glass, installation, social practice, and photography to fabric design, illustration, painting, and digital media.

CCAD’s two-year MFA program is project-based. The non-media-specific curriculum focuses on individual artistic/design development and creative leadership. It brings together talented individuals from a variety of different media to build a community that fosters exploration, professionalism, and creative success.

Cystal Turisch, one of the graduating students, will show photographs that explores the anxieties and insecurities that result from growing up with an alcoholic mother. Her work is divided into different photographic series focusing on obstacles and emotions that have affected her throughout her adult life.

Nathan Gorgen's studio, featuring his main thesis project

“I wanted to be a part of the first MFA class at CCAD,” Turisch said. “I wanted to be able to work with a small, close group of artists and receive a lot of one-on-one attention from professors, mentors, and peers within the school.”

Nathan Gorgen was excited about CCAD’s MFA program because of its location. He had never been to Columbus and was pleased with the amount of artistic opportunities the city holds for his professional career.

“Columbus wasn’t really on my map before I came here, now I realize what an amazing city it is,” exclaimed Gorgen. “I’m so impressed with the professors, the local art scene, and the whole environment that is in Columbus.”

Gorgen’s final piece is a large installation that combines painting and architectural elements.

“I had a lot of time and support throughout this program. I was able to tackle more ambitious projects and get a better conceptual understanding of art and the art I produce,” Gorgen said.

Nicole Crock has found the support in the program unlike that of other schools she researched. Crock decided to attend CCAD because the program was based on a multidisciplinary foundation. The MFA candidate works in mixed media. By working with an array of artists in close proximity, she was able to explore more artistic mediums and learn from her peers’ expertise.

“I hate to say such a cliché phrase, but I really have blossomed here. I needed this program,” Crock said.

Her final thesis project is a multimedia installation that explores the emotions connected with moving from place to place.

Nicole Crock in her studio

“Moving has been the inspiration for my art. A lot of people think it is glamorous that I have been able to travel, but I always longed for the feeling of home and to not feel as though I am rootless,” said Crock.

Following graduation, Crock plans to stay in Columbus and continue focusing on her work. She wants to find a studio space and start connecting with artists within the community.

“I think it is important to make art with the purpose of communicating with people, and that is what I want to do,” Crock said. “I want to learn to be able to seek change, and do it gracefully throughout my life.”

First: The 2012 New Projects MFA Thesis Exhibition opens March 30 and will run through April 27 with an opening reception March 30, 6–8 p.m. CCAD’s first MFA class includes Elena Harvey Collins, Alex Conrad, Nicole Crock, Nathan Gorgen, Chris Harman, Woodrow Hinton III, Virginia Kistler, Kayane Kouzoujian, Cosby Lindquist, Amanda Rouse and Crystal Turisch.

Fine Arts alumnus Andrew Ina’s exhibition was recently reviewed in The Columbus Dispatch for his painting exhibition New Frontier on display at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center through June 25.

“Something’s been brewing in my head for a while,” Ina (CCAD 2006) explained to Melissa Starker for her Dispatch article, Humanity Figures in Bold Works. “I wanted to add a different perspective to my work but organically, out of the work I’ve been doing for a few years.”

Starker wrote, “Layers of thick, extra-wide strokes of acrylic paint and bumpy patches of gesso rise from birch-plywood bases. Some works are left as unaltered showcases for his painting techniques and bold, novel color combinations. For others, Ina puts his back into distressing, sandpapering and gouging down to the wood with the point of a palette knife.”

Ina’s works can be viewed in the Main Hall Gallery at 139 West Main Street in Columbus.

CRG Gallery presents a new series of large-scale works on paper by Fine Arts alumnus Steven Bindernagel (CCAD 2001) during the Armory Art Fair in New York City.

Using watercolor and colored pencil, Bindernagel constructs semi-representational motifs that seem to shift between the architectonic and the completely abstract. Each drawing is constructed layer by layer as the surface is drawn on, painted, erased and reworked several times, so the work’s history (and the artist’s thought process) becomes apparent to the viewer.

Bindernagel is inspired by the urban landscapes of his hometown, Cleveland, OH as well as New York City. He couples the brilliant colors of billboards, neon signs, and glowing lights with the dark and corrosive colors of rust and decay.

The Armory Show is America’s leading fine art fair devoted to the most important art of the 20th and 21st centuries. In its 11 years, the fair has become an international institution. Every March, artists, galleries, collectors, critics and curators from all over the world make New York their destination during Armory Arts Week.

Works by Illustration alumnus Nathan Janes (CCAD 2001) were featured Saturday in the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Councils, Winter Art Pre-Retrospective.

“We’re calling this a ‘pre-retrospective’ because he’s a young man,” said council treasurer Paul Berndt in an article by Port Clinton News Herald. “He’s not a seasoned artist. We will probably have 15 to 20 pieces of his art on display. We will have a meet-and-greet and see how his work has progressed over his career to this point.”

Janes is the driving force behind PUPAGANDA, activist artwork that depicts serious social issues using the family pet as muse. He has been chosen as a contributor to the newly published book, Art is Dead—A Manifesto for Revolution in the Visual Arts. He has also completed commissioned works for celebrities Pete Wentz and Caprice Bourret and has shown work in New York and Chicago.

One of the big changes we’ve made recently is to take Alumni Classnotes out of IMAGE magazine and bring them to you on our CCAD News Blog. We do our best to make sure most of the news our alumni submit to us ends up there, but since there are more than 10,000 of you making news all over the world, it’s a tough job to keep up with it all. Ultimately, not everything can make it into CCAD News. What doesn’t, ends up here.

We’ve also changed how you can submit classnotes. Now when news happens, let us know via the easy-to-use form on the alumni landing page. We only post career-related successes, awards, exhibitions, and publications, but we’d also love to know when you move, get married, or have children—just use that same form.

Now, without further ado, your classnotes from July-December 2010.

Fine Arts alumnus Jimmy Baker (CCAD 2002) was interviewed in the February 2011 issue of Cincinnati Magazine for his upcoming exhibition, Remote Viewing, at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati.

“Baker’s art world star has been on a quick ascent,” Kathy Y. Wilson wrote in her article Cincinnati Kid: Jimmy Baker. “Two months after graduating with an MFA in painting from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning in 2004, he landed a group show at Foxy Production art gallery in New York. One year later there were shows in Philadelphia and Chicago. The same year, Country Club gallery’s Christian Strike took some of Baker’s images with him to Los Angeles and soon the prestigious Roberts & Tilton Gallery came calling with an offer of a show and representation. Since then, his work has hung in museums and galleries in Paris, London, and Basel, Switzerland, and has been purchased for private collections internationally.”

Remote Viewing opens at 8 p.m. on February 25 and runs through April 10. The Contemporary Arts Center is located at 44 E 6th St., Cincinnati. For more information, call 513.345.8400 or visit the center’s website.

The opening of CCAD’s most recent exhibition, produced by the Bureau for Open Culture, brought large crowds and several international and award-winning artists to CCAD’s Canzani Center Gallery Thursday evening.

The opening event culminated in a participatory psychic event and a post-reception dance party.

Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven features 42 works by 17 artists in a wide range of media, including photography, video, painting, sculpture, social intervention, and sound installation. On-hand for the opening reception were featured artists Dennis McNulty (Dublin, Ireland), Ben Kinsley (Pittsburgh, PA), Lara Kohl (Brooklyn, NY), Jeremy Kost (New York, NY), Alejandro Vidal (Barcelona, Spain—actually, he was stuck in New York due to the weather, but he was there in spirit), Malcolm Cochran (Columbus, OH), and Cassandra Troyan (Chicago, IL).

After the opening, Kinsley invited guests to circle around his work—a blown-glass bowl filled with water in an all-black room with around-the-clock audio and video surveillance—for a participatory psychic event. Attendants chanted while Kinsley and Columbus-based psychic Larry Copeland clapped their hands and joined in the rhythmic song. After a minute or so, Copeland instructed the audience to cease their chant and pass all their energy toward the bowl. Some pointed their hands at the vessel, others shouted, most took on the more passive approach, sharing their energy with their minds.

Every Friday through March 4, musicians will play music to the installation. On March 11, Kinsley and Copeland invite the community back to review the surveillance footage with them, identifying and discussing any paranormal action caught on tape and the affect the performances made on the object.

Curated by Director of Exhibitions James Voorhies, Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven explores the way life is charged with an underlying awareness of the passage of time and marked by residues of our culture. The show features the works of Guy Ben-Ner, Joachim Brohm, Gerard Byrne, Malcolm Cochran, Peter Dayton, Ben Kinsley, Lara Kohl, Jeremy Kost, Mark Leckey (Turner Prize winner), Mary Lum, Dennis McNulty, Timothy Nazzaro, Johannes Nyholm (films selected for Cannes 2008, 2009), Pipilotti Rist (honored by Guggenheim Museums), Cassandra Troyan, Jeffrey Vallance (John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation award winner), and Alejandro Vidal.

The exhibition is open through March 12. Information about gallery hours and location is on CCAD’s website.

Fine Arts alumnus Ryan Orewiler (CCAD 2004) has paintings on display in the Port Columbus Gateway to The Arts, an exhibit space located on the ticketing level in the hallway behind MoJoe Lounge at the Port Columbus International Airport.

“I’ve always enjoyed the non-traditional, aerial perspective of the runways and terminals from the airports I have visited throughout the world,” Orewiler said in reference to three paintings of aerial views of Port Columbus International Airport among the artwork on display. “I also enjoy the feeling from the initial lift off of leaving a city and touching down to visit or revisit a destination. Two of my grandfathers were in the U.S. Air Force and inspired me to learn more about flight in general. I plan to one day get my pilot’s license.”

Since 2000, Orewiler has painted hundreds of cityscapes that have been collected and commissioned by individuals and corporations throughout the United States. His influence is the urban environment of his home in Columbus and the cities that he has traveled to around the world including Jakarta, Chicago, Paris, Florence, Berlin, Bali, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. He is a member of Landfillart.org, Roy G Biv, Ohio Art League, German Village Art League (Founder and President), AbX Collective, Oil Painters of America and the Landscape Artists International.

Alumna Michelle Rozic (CCAD 2003) recently received a grant to curate the exhibition and print a 100-page book for Edge of Life, an invitational forestry and art exhibition that includes 31 artists.

The Edge of Life aims to “bridge the fields of forestry and art. Forest pathology is an important aspect of forestry. … Artists naturally gravitate to contemporary concerns and socially conscious issues,” Rozic wrote on her blog. “Each artist will be assigned a forest pathology specimen to use as the impetus for creation.”

Participating artists will include artists in Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Art and professional artists in the field whose work deals with ecological issues. Media for the exhibition includes pin-hole photography, hand-felted wool sculpture, wood-cut printmaking, and digital media mapping.

Rozic received her MFA in printmaking from Indiana University, Bloomington. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Art at Stephen F. Austin State University and coordinator of the printmaking area.

Edge of Life opens Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. at The Cole Art Center, Ledbetter Gallery in Nacogdoches, Texas. For more information about the event, visit Rozic’s blog.

Now Here This, an exhibition by alumna Sarah Brenneman (CCAD 1998), opened Jan. 6 at the Jeff Bailey Gallery in New York City. The show features Brenneman’s recent works on paper in watercolor and collage.

Brenneman has worked in watercolor for 10 years. Recently she collaborated with the poet Nellie Bridge, and created small works in reaction to her poems, All at Once, It’s Out, Flying and At the End of the City, about everyday experiences in the city. These works in turn led to larger works on paper.

This is Brenneman’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. She received an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and was an artist in residence at The Millay Colony for the Arts and Chashama. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

The exhibition runs through Feb. 5. For further information about the show, check out the gallery’s website. Learn more about Brenneman on her website.

A portion of the proceeds from alumna Erica Podwoiski’s (CCAD 2010) solo exhibition will be donated to Metavivor, an organization that provides funding for research on metastatic breast cancer.

“The show features never-before-seen drawings, new paintings, and my latest venture into the wild world of wearable art,” Podwoiski said. “I chose to donate part of the proceeds from my bra collection, Bling 4 Boobs, to Metavivor because it’s one of the few organizations that supports and funds research for women with Stage IV breast cancer.”

“My mom is now living with Stage IV breast cancer and is an active member of Metavivor’s online community,” Podwoiski said. “Unfortunately, 90% of cancer deaths result from Stage IV cancer, but only 2% of research funds are devoted to stage IV. I wanted to support an organization that puts almost all of its donations into innovative research for metastatic breast cancer.”

Investigating female identity in her art is nothing new for Podwoiski. Her first solo exhibition pc4pc <333333 was a visual case study of women and girls on MySpace and Facebook, which explored boundaries, notions of privacy and self, female stereotypes and sexuality in the millennial age.

Podwoiski’s work has been featured on the cover of Columbus’s Alive Magazine and was shown at the historic Belle Isle Conservatory in Detroit.

Coming of Age in an Era of Celebrity Worship is on display December 11–January 30 at the Lido Gallery in Birmingham, Michigan. For more information about the exhibition, visit the Lido Gallery website.

Love in the Shadow of Death, an exhibition by Paul Tepper (CCAD ’01), opens November 14 at Hayley Gallery in New Albany, Ohio.

Tepper is a Columbus-based painter who has exhibited in Philadelphia, PA; Columbus, OH; New Albany, OH; and Balatonfured, Hungary. He worked on the 2003 film, Speak, starring Kristen Stewart and Steve Zahn.

In an interview with Sorina Higgins, Tepper explained his use of exaggerated features within his paintings. “I like to exaggerate certain characteristics to communicate,” Tepper said. “If I’m painting a man and a woman, I like making his hands huge and her hands small, not as a way of judging the feminine and masculine, but just showing that the masculine is big and strong and the feminine is more soft and gentle.”

Gallery hours are Tuesday–Friday 11 a.m.–6 p.m.; Saturday 12–5 p.m.; and Sunday 1–4 p.m. The show ends December 31. Learn more about Tepper on his website.
