Family Weekend 2010

October 7 and 8 will combine two popular events on the CCAD campus, Family Weekend & Homecoming.

Family Weekend is a chance for student’s families to come check out what their students and CCAD have creatively stirred up.

“When parents initially drop off their kids at school they don’t get to witness all the hustle and bustle of campus,” said Erica Ott, residence hall director and assistant director of student activities.

It has been close to a month since the students arrived on campus, and they have had time to become completely integrated into the CCAD community.

Blake Roberts, a third year Advertising & Graphic Design major, shares his enthusiasm, “it is the easiest, most exciting and inviting way to show my family how I live in Columbus, I can call and tell them about my day, but the only way for them to experience my life is to see it first hand and Family Weekend makes that happen.”

Roberts has been attending family weekend for three consecutive years and is even on the Student Programming Board, which actively makes the Family Weekend what it is and helps plan for the event.

“Coming to a college is a physical and emotional transition for both the parents and students, we want this event to be a time when students can brag about their time here and parents can be reassured,” said Jason Bowser, director of student activities and orientation.

This is the first year both events have been combined and the excitement is building on campus. Last year approximately 400-500 individuals participated in family weekend and more are expected this year with the addition of homecoming.

“Family Weekend has always been successful from its planning to its execution. We have had this event for the last 10 years and every year it gets bigger and better,” Bowser said.

There will not be a shortage of activities during the weekend. The Dixie Cups, an all-female improve group, will be performing Friday night. Saturday will be kicked off with a breakfast featuring CCAD faculty and of course you can’t forget the carnival.

The carnival will host an array of inflatables, games, music, and crafts all in the Quad, the open area in front of the Loann Crane Center for Design.

“It is nice to walk out and see the Quad filled with color and activities and see not only our students and their families, but also the faculty and staff with theirs,” Bowser said.

This event has transformed over the years and with Homecoming being joined into this event, it will bring new people out for the festivities. Current students can learn from alumni and everyone can get a chance to reconnect.

“CCAD is one giant family—alumni, students, parents, etc., so it just made sense to merge the two events,” Stephanie Stover, development and alumni relations coordinator, said.

“We wanted to give our alumni multiple reasons to come back to campus—opportunities to catch up, meet with faculty members, and see all of the recent campus improvements,” Stover said.

In addition to Family Weekend & Homecoming CCAD will be opening its latest exhibition, Supply & Demand on Friday, Oct. 7 and hosting Columbus Startup Weekend Oct. 7-9.

President Griffith presents the 2010 Alumni Award for Excellence to Rosanne Percival.

Each year, we ask our alumni to nominate their classmates for the Joseph V. Canzani Alumni Award for Excellence (AAE). It’s a way for us to acknowledge not only the success and contributions of one very deserving graduate, but also the impact CCAD alumni have all over the world.

AAE nominees must be an alum or associate alum of CCAD who has not previously received the award. Finalists are chosen based upon their accomplishments related to artistic excellence, the impact they have had on a broad spectrum of people, the significant advancements they’ve made in their art or design field, and their exemplification of CCAD’s ideals.

The award is presented during our annual Homecoming celebration. This year’s event has been completely redesigned to include an entire weekend of events for the whole CCAD family—alumni, students, parents, and faculty and staff. Save the date: Family Weekend & Homecoming is October 7-9.

The class of 1981 reunited in May.

Each year, several CCAD classes reunite to remember their time here, see where their careers have taken them, and visit the place they once called home. This July and October, we welcome back the classes of 1974, 1998, and 1999. Here are the specifics.

Family Weekend 2010

The students are moved in and  classes are well underway, it’s time for a  little family visit. At CCAD we like to turn the family visit into a high-octane event with the annual Family Weekend.

This year’s event kicked off with comedian and magician Michael Kent, who performed to a packed Canzani Center Auditorium Friday night.

Saturday, after breakfast and a chance to get caught up on what’s going on with CCAD, the Student Programming Board raised the energy level with a Project Runway inspired family contest.

The challenge (a team challenge): make a garment from a selection of household objects (including trash bags, paper, tape and office supplies) in less than half an hour.

In true Project Runway fashion, each team’s garment was featured in a runway show and then scored by three judges. No one was out, but prizes were given to the top three winners. Family team winners were: team Swiler, third place; team Vetterly, second place; and first place went to team Stauble.

Clouds and the threat of rain didn’t dampen the festivities. For the rest of the afternoon students and their guests had a range of activities to check out, including the yearly favorite the carnival on the quad, tours of CCAD’s newest building, Design Studios on Broad, and demonstrations in ceramics and glass blowing.

Family Weekend 2009

CCAD students welcomed their families to campus Oct. 2-4 for the annual Family Weekend.

Always an excellent time for visiting, Family Weekend is also packed with information and fun. The weekend included a chance to meet faculty and an update from the provost. The schedule of entertaining activities included everything from a jazz performance to a carnival on the quad.
