One festive weekend, one big blow out, and one fabulous Homecoming committee to welcome alumni back to campus.

Chances are you already know the committee members, but allow us to introduce them. (And please, RSVP to let them know you’ll be on campus Oct. 7-8.)

Illustration alumna Estella Hickman is a 1972 graduate.

A second Illustration alumna, Evangelia Philippidis, is an active member of the class of 1981. In addition to her Homecoming contributions, she is pitching in to assist with the 1974 class reunion.

Marcia Tabler majored in Advertising & Graphic Design, graduating in 1974.

Another Advertising & Graphic Design alum is Jeff Stahler, class of 1977.

The committee member with the shortest “alum” status is David E. Merz III, a 2011 Advertising & Graphic Design graduate now living in Chicago.

Even though Merz has only been away for a few months, he wants to see for himself if anything has changed on campus (besides the new students!) and he hopes to catch up with several professors to ask questions he has been wondering about since being “in the real world.”

“At Homecoming I’m most looking forward to seeing my friends from school. I’ve missed staying up late with my Mighty All-Nighter friends. I’ve been getting the word out about the event so I can see as many of them as possible during the short weekend,” Merz said

“It’ll be great to see my friends who have also graduated, but I’m excited to see those friends I left behind who are still burning the midnight oil at CCAD, especially those working in Design Group,” he said.

Merz said he received a few messages on the first day of the semester from friends who miss hanging out with him on the quad or at the Market, and he confesses to missing CCAD’s main dining facility. “Looking back, it was a great deal for getting food,” he said.

As an underclassman, Merz was involved with Student Government. He plans to check out what the new officers have in mind to enhance the college experience for current students.

Merz said he’s curious to see who the alumni award winner will be and what he will “have to do someday to be considered for such an award!”

“I wish I could be back for an entire week instead of just a couple of days. I miss Columbus and all the great people there. The people are the best!”

Stahler moved back to Columbus a few years ago, so he is no stranger to campus. “It’s exciting when it’s filled with alumni who have built this campus into a growing, progressive, smart, contemporary school with a still-strong foundation program,” he said.

Stahler commented on the changes to the annual gathering. “I look forward to the new fall Homecoming. Traditionally, the spring graduation on the heels of the annual fashion show makes for a busy campus and not much time to catch up with college friends.”

Facebook has brought Stahler closer to alumni, but he said “seeing someone in person and catching up with them is always a good time.”

When Tabler heard that CCAD was combining Homecoming and Family Weekend she decided it was time for a class reunion.

“Although it has (ha ha!) been only 37 years, not the big 40—the power of all this coming together felt right. So, the class of ’74 is plowing forward with the reunion as well as a few surprises!” she said.

Fine Arts alumnus Roy Doty (CCAD 1942) will receive the Gold Key Award at the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) annual convention in Boston during Memorial Day Weekend. Recipients of the Gold Key Award are considered to be members of the society’s hall of fame.

In an article on the NCS website, it is written, “Roy Doty’s style has remained largely unchanged throughout his career… and yet it’s never looked dated. As other illustration and cartooning styles fell in and out of fashion, Roy’s clean, simple line work has always looked fresh and current.”

During his 40-plus year career, Doty has illustrated more than 60 books and has had work featured in The New York Times, Newsweek, Fortune, Business Week, Field & Stream, Popular Science, and Elle Magazine. Doty’s client list includes Mobil Oil, Macy’s, CBS, Black & Decker, and Ford among others.

In addition to this award, Doty has also received NCS’s Reuben Illustrator of the Year award in 2006. He is also a six time recipient of The Advertising Council’s Illustrator of the Year award.

In February, Doty served as our 1940s representative for an interview in the CCAD Alumni Newsletter and said, “Be yourself and dedicate yourself to something you think is worth it, even if it’s oddball—especially if it’s oddball! I only do me. And I’ve outlasted everybody.” Read the interview in its entirety here.

The National Cartoonists Society is the world’s largest and most prestigious organization of professional cartoonists. Membership is limited to established professional cartoonists or outstanding persons in an affiliated field. Syndicated cartoonist and CCAD alumnus and board member Jeff Stahler (CCAD 1977) is also a member of NCS as is Illustration department chair C.F. Payne, whose work is frequently featured in prominent U.S. magazines, including Time, Esquire, Rolling Stone, Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Book Review, Mad Magazine, and Reader’s Digest.

Ninety percent of CCAD students receive some share of the more than $10,000,000 in scholarships and financial aid that CCAD awards each year. This year for the first time, students who have benefited from donor generosity in years past were invited to take a firsthand role in providing that same support for future students. And they’re succeeding in a big way.

In the first-ever CCAD phonathon, four student callers telephoned more than two hundred alumni who graduated within the last decade, asking for their financial support. They weren’t asking for much—just whatever the recent grads could afford. And whenever a donation was made, the student called that alum back a few days later to express their gratitude (during the even more popular inaugural “thankathon”). We have to say that these students were true rock stars of fundraising, reaching their goal in a matter of days.

Now the Senior Class is getting in on the action, raising money for their Senior Class Gift—a donation to the CCAD Scholarship Fund—by hosting concerts and parties during their last semester on campus. They’re spending as much time together as they can before graduation, while providing some financial assistance to the next batch of students at the same time.

CCAD Illustration alumnus Jeff Stahler (CCAD 1977) had a conversation with WOSU host Ann Fisher on her show All Sides with Ann Fisher on 89.7 NPR News Monday, Feb. 21. The pair talked about the unique world of a humorist and cartoonist.

Drawing Laughter: A Chalk Talk with Jeff Stahler, an exhibition of Stahler’s work, opens Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Hammond Harkins Gallery in Bexley. He will demonstrate drawing and answer questions at the free event.

An award-winning editorial cartoonist who also serves on CCAD’s board of trustees, Stahler creates Moderately Confused, a whimsical slice-of-life daily comic panel for The Columbus Dispatch. Stahler also draws political cartoons that are distributed worldwide by Newspaper Enterprise Association. His cartoons appear every week in USA Today and are frequently reprinted in major magazines and newspapers, including Newsweek and The New York Times.

All Sides with Ann Fisher is a two-hour, daily public-affairs talk show designed to touch upon all sides of the issues and events that shape life in central Ohio. Listeners participate via telephone, e-mail, Twitter, and text messaging to add to the conversations.

So what’d they talk about? Listen to the conversation here.

In an interview airing on CNN’s John King U.S.A., Columbus College of Art & Design trustee Jeff Stahler (CCAD, ’77) talks about what inspires his editorial cartoons.

During the interview, which aired Sept. 7, Stahler discusses cartoons that reflect his perspective on American politics, the 2010 midterm election, and the economy. Stahler explains that he tries to “capture the moment, capture what people are thinking.”

Editorial cartoonist for The Columbus Dispatch, Stahler’s work is distributed worldwide by Newspaper Enterprise Association. His cartoons appear every week in USA Today and are frequently reprinted in major magazines and newspapers, including Newsweek and The New York Times.

Stahler also creates the whimsical slice-of-life comic panel Moderately Confused for Newspaper Enterprise Association.
