Alumnus John Malta’s illustration was published in The New York Times

Illustration alumnus John Malta (CCAD 2010) has now had three illustrations published in The New York Times.

His most recent work appeared alongside an editorial piece by Stephen R. Kelly entitled “Good Neighbors, Bad Border” on Nov. 27, 2012. The article discusses boundary disputes between countries, including the one between the U.S. and Canada over Machias Seal Island.

Malta’s illustration features bald eagles decked out in stars-and-stripes garb playing tug-of-war with a group of sweater-wearing Canadian moose.

Malta’s first illustration for the newspaper ran alongside Robert Klitzman’s op-ed article “My Sister, My Grief” on May 3, 2011. On Aug. 19, 2011, his second illustration accompanied the op-ed article “Engineering Food for All” by Nina V. Fedoroff.

Illustration alumnus John Malta (CCAD 2010) received a grant from the Xeric Foundation to self-publish his comic book, The Professor and the Paperboy.

“I am working on part two of  The Professor and the Paperboy, so I can publish both as a two-part box set,” Malta said.

The book follows the adventures of a distinguished professor of theoretical physics named Reginald Cornelius Oozeman and his paperboy, Grover.

The Xeric Foundation is a private, nonprofit corporation established by Peter A. Laird, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Planet Racers. The foundation offers financial assistance to committed, self-publishing comic book creators and qualified charitable and nonprofit organizations.

Local tech company Bluemile, ranked in 2010 by Inc. Magazine as one of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies, is featuring artwork by CCAD alumni and faculty in its New Albany office as one way to introduce visitors and other programs to the college. Read more here.

Michael Carney (CCAD 2004), who won the 2011 Grammy for Best Recording Package for art direction on the album Brothers by the Black Keys, was interviewed as part of a story on how the digital revolution is affecting both record sales and album design.

Illustration alumnus John Malta (CCAD 2010) had his second illustration published in the paper. He developed the accompanying illustration to the opinion piece,  Engineering Food for All by Nina V. Fedoroff, which ran Aug. 19.

In the article The Incredible, Inevitable Shrinking Album Cover by David Browne, Carney, who majored in Media Studies,  remembers wondering if his bare-bones album cover would even be allowed by its label. The Aug. 12 article explores how album art is being reduced roughly to the size of a postage stamp due to the use of mobile devices.

An illustration by alumnus John Malta ran in The New York Times May 3.

It didn’t take long for Illustration alumnus John Malta (CCAD 2010) to make a mark on the Illustration world. An illustration by Malta ran alongside Robert Klitzman’s New York Times op-ed article “My Sister, My Grief” on May 3.

Malta’s illustration features the body of a headless snake—from it, a dozen or more snakes escape.

“My Sister, My Grief” details how Klitzman—whose sister died in the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center—dealt with the news of Osama bin Laden’s death.

“Bin Laden’s death was cathartic—his terrorist attacks traumatized all of us—but in large part it is only a symbolic victory,” wrote Klitsman. “Al Qaeda may even have more cells and members than it did 10 years ago, though no one knows. Certainly, Islamic extremists are vowing to avenge his death. ‘An eye for an eye’ perpetuates a never-ending cycle of destruction. Dangers continue.”
