Media Studies alumna Manjari Sharma’s project Darshan was recently featured in the Yoga Journal.

The national journal featured the 2004 grad’s photograph Lakshmi with a write-up that will also be included in the journal’s iPad app.

The image is part of Darshan, an ongoing series that Sharma has been working on since 2011. Her goal is to photographically recreate nine gods and goddesses of Hindu mythology. Each photograph in the Darshan series requires the help of nearly three dozen people to create the set, costumes, jewelry, props, makeup, and more. The Lakshmi image alone took more than three weeks to put together and cost nearly $5,000.

Sharma’s work on this project was also recently featured on the cover of Forbes India. Read more here.

Sharma is a native of Mumbai, India, and attended Gyan Kendra High School.

Alumna Manjari Sharma’s project Darshan continues to garner much-deserved attention. Most recently, her photograph of the Hindu goddess Maa Lazmi(or Lakshmi) appeared on the cover of the Nov. 2 issue of Forbes India.

The magazine covered the 100 richest Indians, so it is no surprise that Sharma’s hyper-elaborately staged photograph of Lakshmi, who is a symbol of wealth and prosperity, was chosen as a visual representation of the topic.

The image is part of Darshan, an ongoing series that Sharma has been working on since 2011. She hopes to photographically recreate nine gods and goddesses of Hindu mythology. Her vision is to have print reproductions measuring six feet tall displayed in an installation that resembles a Hindu temple, complete with incense, lamps, and invocations.

Anjan Das, design director at Forbes India, chose the image after recollecting Sharma’s project.

“The term ‘rich’ in the Indian context implies wealth and power—elements that you see in the striking image of goddess Lakshmi, ” Das said. “All those who have made it to the Forbes Rich List are blessed by goddess Lakshmi. She’s steered them through times of economic uncertainty. She is their fortune, wealth, and prosperity.”

Sharma’s project started with the recreation of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi. Creating each photograph in Darshan requires the help of nearly three dozen people to create the set, costumes, jewelry, props, makeup, and more. The Lakshmi image alone took more than three weeks to put together and cost nearly $5,000. For additional support, Sharma turned to Kickstarter, where she raised nearly $26,000.

Sharma has completed five out of the nine images in the series. You can learn more about her project, how to get involved, and view a video showing the entire production process by clicking here.

Sharma began the project by creating an image of the Hindu goddess Maa Laxmi. She then used Kickstarter to raise money to help her continue and expand her project. She raised nearly $26,000 to create the gods Ganesha, Shiva, Durga, and Hanuman.

“Darshan is a Sanskrit word that means ‘sight,’ ‘view’ or ‘vision,’” Sharma wrote on her Kickstarter site. “My project, Darshan, aims to photographically recreate nine classical images of gods and goddesses pivotal to mythological stories in Hinduism.”

Creating each photograph is no small task and requires the help of nearly three dozen people. Everything in the photo is created in a studio—including the set, costumes, jewelry, props, makeup, and more. The first image alone took more than three weeks and cost nearly $5,000 to put together.

Sharma and the Darshan project were recently featured in The New York Times and NPR. Her other photographic projects, including her Shower Series, led her to be named to the Best of 2010 by the American Society of Media Photographers.

Alumna (CCAD 2004) Manjari Sharma’s project Darshan is in full swing and getting attention from The New York Times.

The Times’ blog post provided an update to the project, which Sharma started nearly a year ago.

After creating an image of the Hindu goddess Maa Laxmi, the Media Studies alumna began a Kickstarter site in June 2011 to raise funds to continue her project. Sharma raised nearly $26,000 to create the gods Ganesha, Shiva, Durga, and Hanuman.

“Darshan is a Sanskrit word that means ‘sight,’ ‘view’ or ‘vision,’” Sharma wrote on the Kickstarter site. “My project, Darshan, aims to photographically recreate nine classical images of gods and goddesses pivotal to mythological stories in Hinduism.”

Creating each photograph requires the help of nearly three dozen people. This includes creating the set, costumes, jewelry, props, makeup, and more. The first image alone took more than three weeks to put together and cost nearly $5,000.

“There are billions of gods and goddesses in Hindu mythology,” said Sharma in The New York Times blog. “I could be doing this till the day I die and not have done enough.”

According to the post, Sharma hopes to show the series in a museum exhibition, designed like a temple. She would display the photographs along with parts of the sets and costumes that helped create the deities.

“In some ways, art on the walls in a museum is treated, honored, and placed on a pedestal no different than a deity is in a temple,” she said.

Sharma’s other photographic projects, including her Shower Series, led her to be named the Best of 2010 by the American Society of Media Photographers.

We do our best to get most of the news you submit to us onto the CCAD News Blog, but since there are more than 10,000 of you making news all over the world, not everything can make it into the blog. We’re glad to have another venue where we can share everything with you—this newsletter’s classnotes.

We only post career-related successes, awards, exhibitions, and publications, but we’d also love to know when you move, get married, or have children—just use that same form.

A Media Studies alumna’s latest project was recently featured on one of National Public Radio’s (NPR) blogs.

The Picture Show interviewed Manjari Sharma (CCAD 2004) about Darshan, her project to photographically recreate nine classical images of Hindu gods and goddesses.

The blog article explains that Sharma plans to build every detail of each photograph by hand, which involves set and prop builders, makeup artists, painters, carpenters and jewelry experts. And when everything finally is in place, Sharma captures the scene with a large-format film camera.

“Darshan is a Sanskrit word that means ’sight,’ ‘view’ or ‘vision,’” Sharma wrote on the site. “My project, Darshan, aims to photographically recreate nine classical images of gods and goddesses pivotal to mythological stories in Hinduism.”

“After completing my first successful proof of concept with Maa Laxmi, the financial scope of this project is beyond me and is now in the hands of the universe to see it through,” Sharma said in a video message to potential backers. “My goal is the bare minimum I will need in the production of four more images. This will allow me to complete the first half of the project. Darshan will remain just a dream if not for the generosity of supporters like you.”

One of the big changes we’ve made recently is to take Alumni Classnotes out of IMAGE magazine and bring them to you on our CCAD News Blog. We do our best to make sure most of the news our alumni submit to us ends up there, but since there are more than 10,000 of you making news all over the world, it’s a tough job to keep up with it all. Ultimately, not everything can make it into CCAD News. What doesn’t, ends up here.

We’ve also changed how you can submit classnotes. Now when news happens, let us know via the easy-to-use form on the alumni landing page. We only post career-related successes, awards, exhibitions, and publications, but we’d also love to know when you move, get married, or have children—just use that same form.

Now, without further ado, your classnotes from July-December 2010.

Manjari Sharma (CCAD ’04) was named Best of 2010 by the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP).

ASMP chose Sharma after a personal photography project, The Shower Series, helped her to land her first national advertising campaign. The photographs from this project are now posted on billboards in 19 Indian cities.

In an interview with ASMP, Manjari said, “This body of work had me, I was consumed by it. And ultimately, for me, I have learned that the level of engrossment is directly proportional to the result.”

To hear more from Sharma, check out the entire interview with ASMP.

The photography of alumna Manjari Sharma (Media Studies Still-Based, ’04) recently was featured on a magazine cover and in a commissioned shoot for a German company’s advertising campaign in India.

The cover of the spring 2010 issue of PDNedu, a bi-annual publication for emerging photographers, features an image by Sharma. The same issue includes an interview with and other portrait work by the artist. More information and images are available on the artist’s blog.

A personal project Sharma calls The Shower Series inspired Grohe, a manufacturer and supplier of faucets and showers headquartered in Germany, to commission the photographer for an ad campaign. The company, whose branding includes the tag line “Enjoy Water,” built custom showers in a studio in New Delhi, India. The work, which involved 10 models and approximately 30 crew members, is being used on billboards in several cities in India. Details and images from the shoot are available on Sharma’s blog.

By Chad Hughes

Today we filmed on a fire escape. We also filmed in a room that looked like something from the set of Mad Men!

The digital lab at BBDO

Our morning started very early when we traveled down to Radio City Music Hall, which is right across the street from BBDO New York. Matter a fact you can see the famous Radio City Marquee from Chris Cole’s office window.

Cole, a 1989 graduate of CCAD and VP at BBDO, sat down with us and gave us the inside scoop into the gears that make a giant advertising firm turn. This is where the Mad Men part come into play. The office spaces of BBDO are littered with famous work that the company has produced—Work for major brands like Hyatt, M&M, Gillette, Mountain Dew, FedEx and much more.

There were multiple floors of creative spaces where hidden gems lay around every corner. From the cozy cool digital lab filled with beanbags and wall graffiti to the amazing gathering space that looks like a flashback of the old central filing room ( think old news clippings hanging on walls and original wooden filing cabinets with the labels still attached), the place rocked. Thanks Roy for the early morning tour.

At home with Majari in Brooklyn

We then traveled to Brooklyn to visit with Manjari Sharma (CCAD class of 2004). We grabbed lunch at a local corner café and then headed to her home. She had just arrived from Review Santa Fe, an event for which 600 photographers from all over the world apply and only 100 get selected. She had boundless amounts of energy and was still very pumped up about all the amazing contacts she had made.

Manjari made Alex tea and then we climbed out onto the fire escape to get a great view of her neighborhood. After seeing her work and some sneak peeks on what she will be up to next we headed to Prospect Park. This park is right next to the Brooklyn public library and is made up of great walking paths and a giant hilly meadow that was filled with people.

Who's shooting who?

She informed us that many great concerts happen here and then her and Alex started to talk about the music that inspires them. This very deep conversation took us all the way back to her place where we grabbed our bags and headed to the airport.

That is where I write this blog.

Leaving NY

Our flight got delayed and we are hanging out in the airport for five hours. Ugh. It has been kind of nice just to set down though. We have been running ragged for three days and have gotten some great advice and stories from many talented Alumni. I would personally like to thank all the individuals involved in the project our time in NYC as been an exhilarating experience. Thank you. And, Alex, let’s Fly!
