CCAD’s MFA program launched to an exciting start last semester as 11 graduate students from the USA, England, and Qatar joined the CCAD family. Now in its second semester, the program is recruiting applicants to start in fall 2011

The inaugural MFA class arrived to find a beautiful new facility dedicated to the graduate program on the third floor of Design Studios on Broad, complete with individual studios, a kitchen, lounge, seminar room, exhibition space, and offices. (To see pictures of the space check out New Spaces for New Projects.)

Mentored by CCAD faculty and exposed to an exciting group of visiting artists, the students were quickly hard at work on their first semester projects. Classes in theory and criticism and digital culture supplemented the studio experience and laid a strong foundation for future growth. A final critique at the end of the semester included work in photography, painting, installation, glass, illustration, printmaking, and video.

The spring semester promises to be even more full and engaging. Students have begun work on their second project; the proposals are again works of art in themselves and range across the spectrum of media. All of the students have chosen to participate in teaching internships so they will be observing experienced CCAD faculty in the classroom. Their schedule includes classes in professional practices, theory and criticism, and studio projects. A trip to New York is planned for April.

Applications to start the graduate program in fall 2011 are being accepted through Tuesday, February 15. CCAD’s website to learn more about this unique program, including how to apply.

Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for its first graduate program, the Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts: New Projects.

Utilizing a structure rare in the United States, the multidisciplinary, project-based program is designed to develop not just a candidate’s artistic skills, but also skills in planning, communications, and leadership.

“Our new program will encourage focused theoretical and practical inquiry, complemented by an expectation of entrepreneurship. It’s designed to help artists achieve not only a more mature level of work but also the ability to successfully deliver the work to its audience,” said CCAD President Denny Griffith. “The project-based nature of this new MFA is a point of differentiation for us. I believe we will incubate some prodigious new talent here in Columbus, Ohio.”

Visit the MFA Web pages for more information. Applications are due April 15, 2010.
