A team of CCAD faculty contributed to the production of a bilingual comic book featuring two Latina mothers on a heroic quest to create healthier lifestyles for their children and families.

Contributors to Small Changes Big Results were Richard Aschenbrand, dean of Visual Communications, David Bennett, associate professor, Visual Communications, and Uko Smith, adjunct instructor, Illustration. They served as art director, production manager, and illustrator, respectively, to create a teaching tool for the school of nursing at Case Western Reserve University.

With input from migrant communities in Ohio and Michigan, the book features a colorful story line, pictures, primary colors, and is sized to fit in a purse. The story starts in English but when flipped to the back the language is Spanish. It follows a conversation between the mothers about how to make healthy changes with teachings from a migrant clinic nurse practitioner.

October kicked off with the second-annual Condom Couture event, which featured a runway show of garments constructed from Planned Parenthood’s “Proper Attire”-brand condoms that were modeled by local community leaders.

Richard Aschenbrand, dean of Visual Communications, was one of three judges who rated the runway creations. The top three students received cash scholarships.
