Sixteen distinguished Columbus College of Art & Design alumni have been nominated for the 2012 Joseph V. Canzani Alumni Award for Excellence (AAE). Nominees range from a fashion knitting queen to a Pixar storyboard artist and an art therapy director to an internationally recognized fine artist.

The nominees are Bryan Ballinger ( CCAD 1990), Charlotte Belland (CCAD 1997), Samantha Bennett (CCAD 1995–1999), Sean Blanton (CCAD 2011), Roy Doty (CCAD 1942), Nicky Epstein (CCAD 1974), Michael Flechtner (CCAD 1981), Scott Hull (CCAD 1977), Matthew Kaser (CCAD 1984), Jon Hair (CCAD 1976–1978), Catherine Hyland Moon (CCAD 1978), Paitoon Ratan (CCAD 1993), William D. The AAE will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 13, during Family Weekend & Homecoming. This event is part of an entire weekend of events for the whole CCAD family, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, and staff.

Each year CCAD accepts nominations for AAE as a way to acknowledge not only the success and contributions of one very deserving graduate, but also the impact CCAD alumni have all over the world. Samantha Bennett's Solo Exhibition at Hayley Gallery

Alumna Samantha Bennett (CCAD 1995–1999) will have a solo exhibition, Scars Portraits and Beyond, at Hayley Gallery in New Albany, OH.

This is the Fine Art alumna’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. Work in the show will include memorial portraits of famous people, cityscapes, and other pieces that reflect Bennett’s personal journey.

Bennett paints with amputated fingers after surviving meningitis meningococcal disease at nine months of age. The artist’s experience inspires her to create art for nonprofit groups such as the American Heart Association, the March of Dimes, and the National Meningitis Association.

Bennett also recently appeared on an episode of TLC’s NY Ink.

The opening reception is Feb. 11, 5–11 p.m. Bennett’s work will be on view through March 9, 2012.

Samantha Bennett

Fine Arts alumna Samantha Bennett is scheduled to appear on the July 14th episode of TLC’s NY Ink.

Bennett (CCAD 1995-1999) was invited to be part of the show’s Everyday People Project  to share her story and art after a spring trip to the Big Apple.

Bennett is an artist who paints with amputated fingers after surviving meningitis meningococcal disease at nine months of age and undergoing numerous subsequent reconstructive surgeries.  She began taking art lessons at age six and nine years later began creating art commissions.

In addition to her established career, Bennett creates art for many nonprofit groups like the American Heart Association, March of Dimes, the National Meningitis Association and more. She has a series called Butterfly Portraits: Artwork Dedicated to Loss, which was started after the death of her son Jonas, who was born prematurely. The series has been used in association with the March of Dimes, the National Association for Women in the Arts, and neonatal loss support groups.

Fine Arts alumna Samantha Bennett (CCAD 1999) was recently featured in Ohio’s Columbus Dispatch for her hopeful portraits commemorating lost loved ones.

In an article written by Gina Potthoff, Bennett talks about her art, her desire to bring hope, and the disease that could have prevented the pursuit of her passion. As an infant, parts of her fingers were amputated due to bacterial meningitis; however, that didn’t stop her urge to create. By age 6, she was drawing with her thumb and index finger.

“Most of the time, I don’t feel like I’m handicapped. Most of my life, I’ve dealt with it myself. … To be who I am as a person, I have to stay positive,” Bennett said in the article. “We don’t know why these things happen. But everything happens for a reason.”

Bennett’s paintings are described as “bright and colorful” and filled with “feeling;” a description that matches her attitude. Her story will be posted next month on the National Meningitis Association website. She hopes her story will be an inspiration to others to protect themselves from the rare but often deadly disease that impacted her life.
