Fine Arts alumna Soo Sunny Park (CCAD 1998) has an installation, Unwoven Light, on view at the Rice University Art Gallery in Houston through Aug. 30.

The piece, which is created from 37 individually sculpted units of glass, is an abstract form suspended from the walls and ceiling.

“We don’t notice light when looking so much as we notice the things light allows us to see,” Park notes on the gallery’s website. “Unwoven Light captures light and causes it to reveal itself, through colorful reflections and refractions on the installation’s surfaces and on the gallery floor and walls.”

Park is a recipient of a Joan Mitchell MFA Grant, the 19th Annual Michigan Fine Arts Competition Grand Prize, the Helen Foster Barnett Prize from the National Academy Museum, and the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Fellowship. Her work has been included in exhibitions across the U.S. and has been featured in numerous art publications.

Park is originally from Seoul, South Korea. She moved moved to the United States at a young age, growing up in Orlando, FL, and Marietta, GA, and attending Lake Howell High School.

Check out images from the exhibit on the art blog Colossal.

Sculptures by alumna Soo Sunny Park (CCAD ’98) are on display in Jaffe-Fride and Strauss galleries in the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College now through December 5. Park is an assistant professor of studio art at the college.

Dartmouth’s website posted the following quotation from Park. “There’s a traditional idea of what sculpture is, and I try to stretch that definition. The whole idea of installations is to engage the viewer’s body; moving around in space is part of experiencing the work.”

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Park majored in Fine Arts at CCAD and earned an MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. After a residency in Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, she worked as an installation artist and lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.

In 2001, she was awarded with the River Front Times’ “Best of 2001, Sculptor of St. Louis.” Park is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell MFA Grant, and grand prize winner of the 19th Annual Michigan Fine Arts Competition, Cité Internationale des Arts Studio Residency, Paris, France. She has been featured in Sculpture Magazine, Art in America, and New Art Examiner.

The gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday, 12:30-10:00 p.m., and Sunday, 12:30-5:30 p.m. For more information, call the Studio Art Exhibition Program at 603.646.3651.
