Webcams + Skype in the Classroom
Want to bring in an industry expert, visiting artist, or accomplished alumni, but just can’t work out the schedule? Use Skype instead.
All of the digital presentation systems on campus are equipped with a webcam and Skype software, ready whenever you need it. Here’s what you need:
- Find the Webcam. If your classroom has a digital projector and computer, a USB webcam is attached. Point it toward your class. (A built-in microphone should pick up student comments and questions.)
- Launch Skype (available in the Applications folder on the Mac or in the Start Menu > All Programs on Windows).
- Enter your Skype name and password. If you don’t have one, create a personal login. (It’s free.)
- It is also helpful to know the Skype name for the person you’re calling. Or share yours with them and ask to have them call you.
Please try this a few days before your class! Skype provides online tutorials and help files, and we’re happy to help you prepare in advance. Call the IT Help Desk at 614.222.6174 for advance assistance so you’ll be a pro when class time arrives.
