Gordon Lee examines the urban network and its frequently overlooked and
sometimes hidden infrastructures and objects. Combining his childhood
memories with his fascination for manufactured materials, these mixed-media
works reveal unexpected pleasures in disparate, mundane objects of the urban
experience. Lee renders these “urban legends” in thoughtful and humorous
scenarios, instilling calm, balance and meaning to otherwise incongruous
relationships. In his works these objects become monuments that withstand
the passage of time and ultimately bear witness to the intricate layers of
the human condition.
Urban Legends v. 3.0 features a tribute to the recently deceased Chinese
graffiti artist Tsang Tsou Choi. Highly influential in Lee’s early
development as a child living in Hong Kong in the 1960s, Tsang’s
calligraphic black-ink graffiti covered walls, posts, and public
infrastructures throughout the city. Tsang’s graffiti can still be found in
Hong Kong and continues to resonate with Lee and inform his artistic
practice.
Gordon Lee is CCAD professor and Chair of Drawing & Printmaking. This new
series of works is inspired by a sabbatical in Hong Kong in 2006, which was
supported by a CCAD Faculty Enrichment Grant.
