Major: Illustration
Rank: Junior
Hi! My name is Sarah Wurm and I am a junior here at the Columbus College of Art and Design working towards an Illustration major and a writing minor. For a year now I’ve been working in the Admissions Office as a student ambassador. This means I give tours to prospective students and get to meet anyone interested in the college.
I come from Bucyrus, which is a small town just a little over an hour north of Columbus. For me, the location of CCAD is nice because I can go home whenever I like, but it is far enough that I can be on my own. Columbus is a great city to live in—not too big, but not so small that there is nothing to do. Coming from a small town, I found the transition was not as bad as I thought it would be. Although there was an initial feeling of homesickness, I’ve adapted to life here in the city. Now I feel like I have two homes, and that’s one of the reasons I picked CCAD in the first place.
My college search process was strenuous. One of the biggest decisions I had to make was between going to a liberal arts college or a fine arts college like CCAD. Even though I was a good student in high school, I had senioritis by the time I was a junior. I was definitely ready to go somewhere where I could be totally immersed in the thing I loved most: art. I was looking at a few different schools, but when I took a tour and actually saw CCAD campus, I felt like I was at home. That’s when I knew I was going to go to CCAD.
Since I’ve been here, I feel like I have really grown up and grown as an artist. I feel so inspired just being on campus. My skills have drastically improved, and I think I am finally starting to know what I want to do with the rest of my life. My ultimate goal is to combine my skills by writing and illustrating children’s books. I get excited just thinking of all the opportunities I will have once I graduate. Really that’s what it’s all about—preparing you for a career in doing something that you love, something that you will look forward to doing every day.
So what is my advice to you? If you are a prospective student, try hard not to procrastinate. Choosing a college is an important decision because you have to live with it for a fairly long time. You are in for four years of hard work wherever you go, so you might as well make them fun and worthwhile. If you are looking for a career in the arts, there is no better place to start than CCAD. Give us a call and I’ll show you around!
