Join the Columbus College of Art & Design, Columbus Museum of Art, and Franklin Park Conservatory as we explore glass, botany, and art practices as applied to the interdisciplinary classroom experience. This day of educator professional development, inspired by CMA’s Chihuly Illuminated, FPC’s Chihuly Reimagined, and CCAD’s Descent to Revolution, includes a lecture, demonstrations, gallery and hands-on sessions. This professional development program begins with a lecture and glass demonstration at FPC Thursday evening, Oct. 15. Friday’s portion continues at CCAD and CMA with hands-on and gallery sessions.
Sessions:
Each session will be offered in the morning and repeated in the afternoon.
Creatively Teaching Chihuly
Transform your classroom into a glassblowing studio using drama, imagination, and creativity. While focusing on Chihuly, this workshop will provide inspiration for turning any class into a labratory for creative experimentation.
Art + Conversations = Critical Thinking
The Ability to think critically is a key component for 21st-century learning. As business, industry, and government focus on the next generation's workforce, critical thinking skills become even more essential. Recent studies have shown that looking and talking about art can improve critical thinking skills. Become acquainted with strategies to engage your students in critical thinking and discover how to play a pivotal leadership role in your school. Participating educators will receive free materials to use in the classroom.
Installation Art
Explore the possibilities of installation as subject matter in the classroom. Come prepared to roll up your sleeves and try your hand at an installation as inspired by glass.
Glass in the Class
You may not have a hot-shop, but have no fear, there are other ways to bring glass into the classroom. Participants will explore assemblage and found art as well as materials that mimic and reference the ethereal nature of this uniquely translucent material using CMA's Chihuly Illuminated as reference.
Botony as Inspiration
Inspired by Franklin Park Conservatory and CCAD's outdoor gardens, participants will examine art informed by botany in contemporary and historical contexts. Attend this session and bring new angles back to the classroom with this rich and plentiful resource.
