Creative Summer Workshops

Creative Summer Workshops are a series of intensive workshops for children, youth, and adults. Each workshop offers quality art instruction taught by CCAD faculty and arts professionals. Focused instruction is geared toward developing skills and knowledge of a particular media or subject. Course offerings might include painting, drawing, computer graphics, ceramics, or sculpture. Workshops are scheduled in June and July.

Drawing Foundations
Drawing is the foundation of visual communication for fine art and design fields. Students will learn the basics of drawing; perspective, rendering, and value structures using a variety of media.

Students will complete a variety of projects that will improve drawing skills and enhance techniques used to realistically reproduce their world. Students will draw in the studio as well as on location learning measured drawing, perspective, and value structures.

Character Design
Learn how to design imaginative characters for children's books, comic books, and animation through a variety of fun drawing projects and exercises. Students will explore everything from costumed gesture drawing to designing and constructing three-dimensional characters from sculpey. This workshop will cover the necessary skills to bring doodles of super heroes or fantasy characters to life.

Figure Drawing (2 weeks)
Proportion, foreshortening, and planer structures of the figure will be emphasized while focusing on drawing issues as they relate to working from the nude model. Students will work from extended poses, creating drawings with attention to line and value.

Papermaking
This course serves as an introduction to basic papermaking techniques. The instructor will give demonstrations and facilitate class exploration/studio time. Students are encouraged to bring in additive ingredients and collage materials to embellish the basic paper recipes or to add a design element to finished artwork. Emphasis will be on exploration of materials and techniques; however students will design and create a finished piece of artwork such as a book or small sculpture. Students are encouraged to produce paper with plans to use it in future art experiences.

Printmaking
Students will learn to create images using printmaking tools and processes. Explore a variety of techniques that may include relief, screen-printing and mono-print. Students will explore design, color, and light through editions.

Claymation
Animation through Claymation will be explored from storyboard to final production. Students will view Claymation shorts as an introduction to the creative process. Students will develop storyboards; construct a background, props, set, and characters, before filming the final animation.

Art & Technology
This workshop will emphasize creativity, personal narrative, and fun. Students will learn how to compose successful images using photographs, scanned images, and Photoshop in CCAD's extensive computer imaging facilities. Some knowledge of Macintosh, a 35 mm or digital camera, and a strong sense of exploration are helpful.

Oil Painting
Learn to create vibrant, colorful paintings using a limited palette. Students will experience the power and versatility of primary colors while creating beautiful landscape paintings on location and still-life paintings in the studio. Exercises designed to expand knowledge of color theory and painting with oils are included.

Early Foundations of Art 1
Students will be encouraged to explore, experiment, and use materials in new and unusual ways. Students are exposed to many different materials and techniques to instill familiarity with processes and media commonly used in art. Drawing, painting, and three-dimensional design studies are all included in this dynamic week of real art experiences. Proper care and management of supplies will also be discussed.

Students will be encouraged to increase the naturalism in their work by practicing shading, accurate proportions, and observation. Technical skills and familiarity with processes and media will be developed through drawing, painting, and three-dimensional studies. Students will complete projects designed to encourage creativity and an ongoing exploration of what materials will do.

Digital Painting
Students are introduced to Painter software as a tool in the creation of artwork. Students will explore fundamental components of digital art, including composition and color use, in the creation of successful artwork in CCAD's Mac lab.

Mixed Media Collage
Collect, organize, digest, and create amazing collages using the following techniques: photo transfers, block printing, batik and paste papers. Projects may include a self-portrait collage series, a landscape collage, quick mini collages, or a collaged journal or sculptural book object. Students will use simple journaling and sketchbook exercises to develop and hone aesthetic styles.

Children's Storybook Illustration
Explore the magical world of children's literature by learning the process of creating designs and illustrations for a storybook. Students will design the main character, the book dummy or master plan, and complete many of the illustrations in a manner appropriate for publication. Guidance in freelance illustration, the publishing business, and historical information about children's art and literature will also be included.

Ceramics (2 weeks)
Working in CCAD's ceramics studio, students will explore the many techniques of hand-building and receive basic instruction on the use of the potter's wheel. Ceramic creations will be fired in the kilns upon conclusion of the workshop.

Design
Everything in our world is designed, but how? Students will learn the basic principles behind good design from concept to product. Basic exercises to teach design elements will culminate in a completed project.

Web Design
This five-day course utilizes Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver software, all provided in CCAD’s Mac labs. Basic design tenets will be discussed and applied to projects in order to guide students to completion of their own Website. Type and graphics, tables, frames, links, and basic animations will all be discussed. In class exercises will lead to a basic site that can be uploaded. Prior basic computer skills and knowledge is recommended but not required to register for this course. This course is a co-requisite with Computer Illustration Using Photoshop Techniques.

Wildlife Drawing & Painting
Explore various methods of portraying birds, beasts and their environment, including drawing, painting and printing. Techniques for depicting textures, shading, and methods of accurately portraying animal characteristics and environments will be practiced.

Inspiration, Ideation, Application
Enter this classroom and experience inspiration from the inside out. The museum, libraries and galleries will be utilized to gather reference and inspiration. Students will develop concepts based on research and implementation just as the professionals do, you’ll sketch, paint and create 2D and 3D pieces from a variety of materials. Discussions, slides, and videos of artists and their work will enhance this experience.

Bookbinding and the Artist’s Book
Focus on the book as art while learning to make traditional hardbound and non-traditional forms. Create blank books and albums, Artists' Books (books as original art objects), rebind, and alter a book. The variety of books and bindings you will learn include: an accordion fold book, four Japanese stab bindings, a Coptic stitch section binding, and a hard bound screw post photo album. The origins of the book, and the advantages and disadvantages of various adhesive and non-adhesive techniques will be discussed. Book Arts are an incredibly versatile and current art form for beginners with little art experience, to the professional artist, and everyone in between!

Digital Photography
This three day workshop is designed for students who are just beginning to venture into the world of digital cameras. Emphasis will be placed on basic use and handling of cameras to gain practical tools for working with the digital format. Students will be introduced to getting pixels into the computer, creating and saving image files, File formats, and transferring to CD-ROM. Interesting and fun uses for saved images will be discussed. During class, students will have access to a computer lab with the instructor. Students are asked to have a functioning digital camera and CD-R storage disks.
