Saturday Morning Art Classes:

Course Descriptions: Grades 10 through 12

Tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students may choose one 10-week course per term.

Portfolio Development:
High School students who may have an interest in applying to a college program of art and design are strongly advised to enroll in the portfolio course. Students are encouraged to develop their own voice while creating dynamic pieces for the portfolio. Information regarding exhibitions, college entrance requirements, and strategies for the portfolio are provided. Parents will be included in informational sessions about the importance of the portfolio and the admissions process.

Illustration Portfolio Development:
Illustration Portfolio class addresses the needs of the potential art college student with particular interest in Illustration. This program emphasizes observational drawing and the requisite skills and techniques needed for realistic representation of the subject matter. While continuing to hone their drawing skills, students are encouraged to produce a successful portfolio. Information regarding exhibitions, college entrance exams, and strategies for the portfolio are provided.

Drawing:
Students develop drawing skills through the practice of perspective, correct proportions, value studies, and measured drawing. Students will work from still-lifes and models while using a variety of media.

Students concentrate on increasing skills used to realistically portray what they see. Drawing techniques include measured drawing, value structure, proper proportions, and perspective. Students will work from stil-lifes, models, and interior spaces.

Foundations of Oil Painting:

Advanced Oil Painting:
Painting techniques including color mixing, washes, brushstrokes, and proper paint handling will be addressed. Students will spend extended time on paintings, incorporating good compositions, color theor, and strong underlying drawing.

Digital Media and Web Design:
Students will spend five weeks learning digital illustration utilizing Photoshop techniques and five weeks in web design. This course uses Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver software. Basic design tenets will be discussed and applied to projects in order to guide students to completion of their own illustrations and web site. Prior basic computer skills and knowlege is recommended but not required.

Silkscreen:
Basic techniques of silkscreen printing are introduced. Students will explore a variety of methods used in CCAD's printmaking labs beginning with concept drawings to an edition of prints.

Intaglio:
Beginning with concept drawings, students will progress through the process of intaglio printing; transferring images to a metal plate, etching, use of the printing press, and pulling an edition of prints. Basic procedures, techniques, and aesthetics of metal printmaking are addressed.

Afternoon Classes: Grades 10 through 12

Workshops meet for 10 weeks on Saturday afternoons from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m.

Figure Drawing:
An integral part of an arts education is drawing; more specifically, drawing from the nude model. Admissions studies have shown that students who have had some experience in life drawing and can include examples of life drawing in their portfolios have a greater chance of gaining admission to a college of art and design and of winning scholarships.

Students will focus on drawing issues as they relate to working from the nude model. Areas of special importance will be proportions in relationship to bony landmarks, dynamics of movement through gesture drawing, likeness through portrait studies, and light and form. Extended poses will predominate, providing opportunities for portfolio enhancement. Because of the sensitive nature of life drawing, we are asking for parental permission to participate in this workshop.

Introduction to Fashion Design:
Students will explore the many aspects of the fashion design world in this fast-paced introductory course. Different areas of fashion will be the focus each week, including: color trends; fashion illustration and layout; construction of garments; fibers and fabric; dyeing and finishing; flat sketches; and merchandising. Lecture and activities will lead to a basic understanding of these fundamentals.

All course descriptions are general guidelines and are subject to change. All courses are noncredit.
