Alum honored for Excellence in Teaching

Fine Arts alumnus Nicholas Nihira (CCAD 2002) was selected to receive an Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award.

Nihira, an assistant professor of art at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, MO, was one of 104 St. Louis-area teachers ranging from kindergarten to college level chosen to receive the award. Honorees were selected by their school’s administration for their achievements and dedication to teaching.

Awardees received a Tiffany’s crystal apple at the ceremony and are given an opportunity to apply for a Gold Star Grant from Emerson. The competitive grants are designed to fund educational projects relating to technology, innovation and leadership. Results will be announced in spring 2014.

“Dedicated teachers and quality education provide the foundation to create future leaders, business managers and skilled individuals who can make a difference in our ever-changing world,” said Patrick J. Sly, Emerson executive vice president. “Emerson is proud to recognize these educators for their tireless commitment to our students.”

Located in St. Louis, Emerson manufactures products and provides services for industrial, commercial, and consumer markets.

Nihira attended Festus High School in Festus, MO.
