Columbus College of Art & Design won big at the annual Columbus Society of Communicating Arts Creative Best awards. CCAD students were standouts at the celebration on Nov. 17, 2016, taking home nine awards in all.

That includes the Student Best of Category Award to Katie Schwendeman (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2018) for “Raise Your Voice,” a voter turnout campaign aimed at millennials.

Members of CCAD’s Student Agency — a student-staffed, in-house design agency — were among those recognized at the awards ceremony. Winners included Josh Smukal (Cinematic Arts, 2019), who earned a Merit Award for his video profile of a first-year student, Audrey, as part of the agency’s “CCAD Stories” feature, and Isabel Hickok (Cinematic Arts, 2017), who earned a Merit Award for her video work featuring CCAD’s 2016 Senior Fashion Show.

Joshua Bodman, CCAD Chair of Advertising & Graphic Design, said the Creative Best Awards are particularly special because they recognize both student and professional work.

“We are thrilled to have our students sweep the CSCA Creative Best award competition this year. We receive buckets of awards from national and global competitions, but there is much satisfaction in seeing students on stage on this fabulous night,” he said.

In addition to Schwendeman, Smukal, and Hickok’s awards, Merit Awards went to the following CCAD students:

  • Schwendeman, Elizabeth Cansfield (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2018), and Student Agency member Teodoro Viera (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2018), for “FISH”
  • Woomin Jeong (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2017), for “Sifter”
  • Joe Van Hove (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2017), for “MFA Mailer”
  • Joo Young Joung (Advertising & Graphic Design, Fall 2016), for “Aveda International” and “WD-40 Bike”
  • Caitlin Mulhall (Advertising & Graphic Design, Fall 2016), for “J-Pops”

Judges for the CSCA Creative Best Awards were Jennifer Hood, a Newport Beach, Calif.-area cofounder of branding firm Hoodzpah Design; Jesse Reed, associate partner for Michael Bierut at the New York office of Pentagram Design; and David Vawter, executive vice president and chief creative officer at Doe-Anderson in Louisville.
