Kicking off 2018, Comicon gives a big shout-out to the work of a recent Columbus College of Art & Design Illustration alum, Broad & High highlights a Fine Arts professor’s exhibition, and all the Short North construction feels a little brighter thanks to CCAD student artwork. Get the skinny on what’s happening on campus, in Columbus, and points well beyond.


Artist Shae Beagle (Illustration, 2017) made another national best-of list, this time as Comicon.com’s number six Best Comic Artist of 2017 for their work illustrating Moonstruck. Comicon wrote “their soft lines and the pastel color palette can make even the most fearsome of creatures like Gorgons and minotaurs look absolutely loveable and charming.” Beagle creates Moonstruck alongside writer Grace Ellis and Comics & Narrative Practice Professor Laurenn McCubbin. Broad & High will feature the work of Fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts Professor Tim Rietenbach in a segment that airs Thursday, Feb. 1, at 8 p.m., with a focus on his exhibition titled Fake at Angela Meleca Gallery. Read more here.

McKay Lodge Conservation Laboratory celebrated sculptor Tom Podnar (Fine Arts, 1975) for his 25 years of art conservation at the Laboratory and for achieving what the fine art institution called “a true mastery of his field.” Read more here.

Candid Views of Life Inside and Outside at High Roads Gallery in Worthington will feature the work of artist Jeff Stahler (Advertising & Graphic Design and Illustration, 1977). The exhibition — which features Stahler’s original editorial cartoons, watercolors, and Moderately Confused comic panels — will be on view Feb. 1 through March 25, with an artist reception from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4. In The Heart of the Storm, Jeremy Rosario (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2000) examines the human condition in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. View Rosario’s new boy of work at the artist reception 6 – 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at Flat 51 in German Village. All proceeds from the show benefit relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Read more here.

Kirkus Reviews called Janet Beard’s new book “a fascinating look at an underexplored chapter of American history.” The Atomic City Girls is a novel about everyday people who worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II. Join Beard, adjunct instructor of CORE Liberal Arts: Writing, Literature & Philosophy, from 7 – 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Two Dollar Radio Headquarters to celebrate the book’s February launch. Graphic designer and art director Jay Fletcher (Illustration, 2000) designed the letterpress package of new SNL playing cards that feature illustrations of iconic skits by artists Harold Apples and Jacob Rhoades. Read more here.

Adjunct Instructor Judy Rush has an upcoming show with painter Michael Halliday called I Felt, You Paint at the Cultural Arts Center, on view Jan. 12 through Feb. 10. Read more here.

As you pass through the Short North Arts District, keep an eye out for sidewalk barriers covered in artwork designed by CCAD students. The 23 original works of art were designed so that the 400 barricades tell a cohesive, compelling story in any order they’re arranged. Read more here.
