Artist Statement
My work explores the ways in which reality, memories, and sensory experiences can be manipulated, distorted, and obscured by mental illness. This fascination is rooted in the brain's storage and processing of this easily corruptible information. My prints and drawings highlight quiet moments that create tension between peacefulness and restlessness. Imagined spaces and recalled events become visual through layering images and collaging semi transparent visual elements. Methods of manipulation of these materials include chine colle, stacking different papers, stitching on the surface of an image, and the weaving of components together. The visual struggle of memory and reality is integral to the work; multiple perceptions can be experienced, albeit not at the same time.
