Wei Ling Chang
My work grapples with the intersection of my identities as an international student from a traditional Chinese family and the effects of that tradition on my emotional state. Incorporating symbolic hands, my work makes tangible my abstracted feelings of being controlled. The numbers and sizes of marks show identity, control, and the horror of being touched by so many. I paint my emotions as organic shapes to evoke empathy with the viewer. My work becomes a bridge to allow me to communicate with others as my paintings act as a mirror, pushing us all to introspection.
