Studio Art with an Emphasis in the History of Art & Visual Culture

Discover yesterday and connect it to today.

If your interest in art isn't just the creation of it but the inspiration behind it, then the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with an Emphasis in the History of Art & Visual Culture program is your path to a rewarding career. A practice-based major, it focuses on modern and contemporary art and centers on two tracks: curatorial practices and theory and criticism. The coursework features a combination of studio, research and practicum experiences to link the study of art history to the diverse worlds of contemporary art production and presentation. You'll unravel the stories behind great works of art, ranging from monumental to small-scale, while learning about the artists’ lives and societies in which their visions were created. And you'll be prepared for positions in museums, galleries, auction houses and publishing, as well as graduate-level study.

You'll have access to:

  • Battelle Hall (sculpture and jewelry), Kinney Hall (ceramics, printmaking and the glass lab) and The Amelita Mirolo Fine Arts Building (drawing and painting)
  • Four galleries used exclusively for student exhibitions
  • A well-equipped slide-shooting/documentation studio
  • Semi-private studios
  • The Beeler Gallery, which — with its rotating series of exhibitions and visiting artists and scholars — functions as an important classroom space as well
