First Congregational Church & CCAD's Quad
10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
CCAD welcomes first-year and transfer students at Convocation on Monday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church. The event will include a welcome from President Melanie Corn, words from Wexner Center for the Arts residency award winner Sharon Udoh (Counterfeit Madison), as well as remarks from Student Government Association President Alex Braughton (Fashion Design, 2020), and from Provost Dona Lantz. At 11:45 a.m., CCAD students, faculty, and staff will line up along Gay Street to cheer on the new students in a bagpipe-led recessional.
Classes will pause at 10:15 a.m. to provide the CCAD community with time to attend Convocation and related events. Returning students, faculty, and staff can picnic on the Quad beginning at 10:30 a.m. First-year and transfer students can join them following the recessional. Classes will resume at 12:30 p.m.
Sharon Udoh has spent the past few decades of her life as a C++ coder, a vegan baker, a short- order cook, a church choir accompanist, a marathoner, a terrible saxophonist, and both a registered Republican and Democrat.
She is the composer and bandleader for Counterfeit Madison, oftentimes with bassist Adam Hardy and drummer Seth Daily. Their performances are magnetic, dangerous, and kind. Counterfeit Madison recently released their second full-length, Opposable Thumbs to warm reviews. She is a Wexner Center For The Arts Residency Award Winner, and a performer in Joan Didion’s “The White Album”, directed by Lars Jan, recently showing at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA.
Udoh’s residency work will incorporate several elements, including a music video and release party for Counterfeit Madison’s upcoming album, Knucklehead, and an Aretha Franklin tribute concert, created in collaboration with Columbus performer DJ Moxy. She’ll also curate a music bill for performances by choreographer and dancer nora chipaumire at the Wex in fall 2019. She’s on Instagram at @counterfeitmadison.
