John Kortlander served on the CCAD faculty from 1991 to 2023. He taught a wide range of courses, including thesis, painting, figure drawing, watercolor, and art & entrepreneurship. His work has been included in exhibits and film festivals throughout the United States and Europe, including at the Smithsonian Institution, Wexner Center for the Arts, Studio Arts Center International in Florence, Italy, and Kulturrathaus in Dresden, Germany. Kortlander has a strong interest in sustainability and the environment. Since retiring, he has focused on designing, building, and remodeling several sustainable homes, including the Angel Ridge Art House, which is a creative retreat and Airbnb near Athens, Ohio.

He has a BFA in art history from Ohio University and an MFA in painting from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
