Columbus Museum of Art brings a CCAD grad’s work to light with new solo exhibition, an alum is named Teacher of the Year, and podcasts by CCAD students and staff are in the running for Columbus Podcast Awards. Get the skinny on what’s happening on campus, in Columbus, and points well beyond.


June 14–September 28, Columbus Museum of Art will host the solo exhibition In a New Light: Alice Schille and the American Watercolor Movement, featuring work by Alice Schille, a leading artist of the first half of the 20th century, who attended what was then the Columbus Art School (now Columbus College of Art & Design) and was a faculty member from 1904 to 1948. The Columbus Dispatch featured Jennifer Sowders (Illustration, 1994) in an article on the Columbus Cultural Arts Center exhibition Operation Monarch, which depicts the artists’ battle with and recovery from addiction, and which is on view through Saturday, May 11. Read more here.

Erin Wozniak (Fine Arts, 2003), an art teacher at Green Intermediate School, was recognized as the 2019 Teacher of the Year during the Stark County Educational Service Center’s annual Education Celebration, reported the Canton Repository. Read more here.

Darrek Robertson (Industrial Design, 2016) and Roger Williams (Fine Arts, 1968) were two of four winners of a competition that will result in their work going on display on the south side of PromoWest’s A&R Music Bar for one year as part of the PromoWest and Columbus Makes Art 2019 Exhibition. After the finalists were chosen by PromoWest and the Greater Columbus Arts Council, winners were selected by public vote. Read more here.

Virginia Birchfield (Interior Design, 2009) has a solo exhibition on view at Columbus’ John Glenn International Airport through June 28. Read more here.

Four paintings by Professor Hiroshi Hayakawa (Photography, 1995), including one Best of Show award-winner, will be on view May 4June 2 at the Mansfield Art Center as part of the 74th Annual May Show, a juried exhibition. Read more here.

First, You Hustle, a podcast by Assistant Director of Career Services Jordan Bell, is up for the Best Entrepreneurship Podcast and Podcast of the Year at the inaugural Columbus Podcast Awards, whose winners will be awarded in late May. Other award-nominated podcasts with CCAD connections include Polterguys with Matty McClelland (Advertising & Graphic Design, 2019) in the TV & Film category, and The 3rd Floor Podcast with CCAD AV Technician Todd Church (and whose episodes have included interviews with Bell and with CCAD Lead Photographer Ty Wright), in the Society & Culture category.
