Beeler Gallery announces spring 2018 season

Beeler Gallery Season by Director Jo-ey Tang

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Beeler Gallery at Columbus College of Art & Design presents How well do you behave? IN THE FLAT FIELD., on view Feb. 1 through March 25, 2018.

The season showcases printed pieces from various creative fields, including art and design school exhibition posters from around the world, fashion show invitations by the design director for Artforum, and a special 1970 issue of a short-lived art tabloid featuring writings by Andy Warhol and other artists.

The season will also include An Art Book Affair, Columbus, Ohio’s first art book fair, happening Feb. 24 – 25.

How well do you behave? IN THE FLAT FIELD. marks new Director of Exhibitions Jo-ey Tang’s first season at Beeler Gallery. Tang previously served as curator at Palais de Tokyo in Paris and arts editor of the literary magazine n+1.

Exhibited items will include:

  • New York fashion designer duo Eckhaus Latta’s runway invitations from 2013 to 2018, designed by Artforum Design Director Eric Wrenn and including pieces printed on bags and towels.
  • The first unauthorized English edition of Guy Debord’s influential and provocative 1967 book The Society of the Spectacle, by Black & Red Books and the Detroit Printing Co-Op.
  • Posters, postcards, and promotional materials from art and design school galleries, including pieces from Portikus, Städelschule (Frankfurt, Germany), Villa Arson (Nice, France), ÉCAL (Lausanne, Switzerland), Cranbrook Academy of Art (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan), and California Institute of the Arts (Valencia, California).
  • A special 1970 rainbow lithograph issue of the short-lived art tabloid Culture Hero, founded by Les Levine, dedicated entirely to then Village Voice critic Jill Johnston, with writings by Andy Warhol, the composer Meredith Monk, and the choreographer Yvonne Rainer.

How well do you behave? IN THE FLAT FIELD. will open Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at Beeler Gallery. The season will continue through March 25, 2018.

Beeler Gallery at Columbus College of Art & Design is an active site for contemporary art practices and contingent fields.
