New exhibition showcasing the power of space and perspective will feature work from Stephanie Syjuco and James Turrell, along with CCAD alum Chad Hunt and Columbus-based Roger Beebe
COLUMBUS, Ohio—A new exhibition at Beeler Gallery at Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) celebrates the work of renowned artists who showcase the powers of space and perspective through contemporary photography and lens-based practices.
Curated by CCAD Faculty Director of Galleries Tim Rietenbach and CCAD Chair of Photography & Associate Professor Darren Lee Miller, the exhibition 1,000 Miles Per Hour will open Thursday, Sept. 15, with an artist panel featuring Roger Bebee, David Bowen, Chad Hunt, Lisa Jarrett, and Ben Kinsley from 4 to 5 p.m. in Canzani Screening Room. A reception will follow in Canzani Atrium from 5 to 7 p.m. Both the artist panel and reception are free and open to the public, and are located on the ground floor of Canzani Center on CCAD’s campus. Beeler Gallery will host an artist talk on Friday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to noon in the Canzani Screening Room with Lisa Jarrett, whose work Meditate on the Blank Space Below is part of the exhibition.
Rietenbach said NASA’s Voyager Golden Record and Charles and Ray Eames’ film Powers of Ten served as vision fulcrums for the exhibition, as both provide unique perspectives of life on earth through the creative properties of photography and videography. “This exhibition provides both micro and macro views of Earth,” said Rietenbach. “We chose pieces that challenge one’s perspective of how we as human beings interact with space and time—all through the transcendent power of a lens.”
In addition to NASA images and the Eames film described above, 1,000 Miles Per Hour—the speed of Earth's rotation at the equator—will include the works of contemporary artists whose practices demonstrate distinct approaches to the art of recording, and that broaden the indexical and poetic deployments of contemporary photography and other lens-based practices. Artists and their exhibited work will include:

- Frank Drake and Jon Lomberg, planetary and cultural photos from Drake and NASA, select images and graphics from Lomberg, all from Voyager Golden Record

- Lisa Jarrett, Meditate on the Blank Space Below
- Ben Kinsley and Robin Hewlett, Street With A View
- Hans Klompen, Orlando Combita-Heredia, Jeremy Naredo, and Sam Bolton, Cyllibula 2, Macrodinychus, Nematalycidae (colorized Mite), and Osperalycus leg
- Dawit L. Petros, A Constant Re-telling of the Future in the Past

1,000 Miles Per Hour is part of the 2022 FotoFocus Biennial, a monthlong celebration of photography and lens-based art that unites artists, curators, and educators from around the world. The 2022 FotoFocus Biennial, now in its sixth iteration, activates over 100 projects at museums, galleries, universities, and public spaces throughout Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton, and Columbus, Ohio in October 2022. Each Biennial is structured around a unifying theme; for 2022 that theme, World Record, considers photography’s extensive record of life on earth while exploring humankind’s impact on the natural world.
1,000 Miles Per Hour will run through Friday, Oct. 28. Beeler Gallery, located on the first floor of Canzani Center on CCAD’s campus at 60 Cleveland Ave., is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday–Saturday. Parking is free.
